Scientists at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in Creve Coeur are trying to genetically modify cassava, a crop with no market potential that could help solve hunger in the developing world. Reporter Eric Hand and photographer Dawn Majors of the Post-Dispatch spent three weeks in Africa this summer trying to understand the importance of cassava in urban and rural life.
