Saint Louis Post-Dispatch

Defending champion Fabian Cancellara won the individual time trial at the World Championships on Thursday in Stuttgart, Germany, finishing the 27.9-mile  course in 55 minutes, 45.35 seconds for an average speed of just over 30 miles per hour. Runner-up  Laszlo Bodrogi  finished second, 52.06 seconds behind Cancellara.

Only two Americans were among the 69 riders who participated.

–  David Zabriskie finished 12th in 55:55.15, falling back at each time-check — from third at the first time-check, to fifth and then eighth before the finish.

– Jason McCartney placed 20th in 58:24.31.

The road race portion of the World Championships will be Sunday.
