Matched set for Huff
Springfield’s Brad Huff has a matched set of medals from the USA Cycling Track championships. He earned a bronze Saturday in madison, a 40-kilometer race, with Slipstream teammate Mike Friedman. Huff earned a gold Wednesday in team pursuit and a silver in individual pursuit Thursday.
Huff has had a productive year, putting himself in good position for the Olympic trials in track. But he’s still hasn’t announced what team he’ll be riding for next season. It won’t be Slipstream, and that’s too bad. You can rah-rah all you want for Jonathan Vaughters taking Slipstream to the big races in Europe and signing some major names from other teams — David Millar, Dave Zabriskie, Christian Vande Velde Big Magnus Backstedt, Julian Dean — but the cash runs out at some point. Sure, Slipstream is trying to be a more American presence in Europe, but some American members of this year’s team are paying the price. Huff and St. Louisan Michael Lange are among the casualties of the shift in philosophy. Stay tuned for updates on where the duo is headed next year.
