Tour de France route announced

The route for the 2008 Tour de France was unveiled today in Paris.

The highlights

–  21 stages, with no prologue

– 2 individual time trials (again, no team trial)

– 9 mountain stages, including 4 mountaintop finishes among 5 high-mountain stages and 4 medium-mountain stages

– 19 climbs in the top three categories — H.C., Category 1 and Category 2

–10 flat stages

– 2,174 miles

– Stage 17 begins in Embrum and ends at Alpe d’Huez,  with the 131-mile trek including  Col du Galibier and Col de la Croix-de-Fer.

– The Tour begins in Brest and takes a counter-clockwise route with dips into Spain and Italy before ending  of course  in Paris on the Champs-Élysées.
