Tour of Missouri patron drops out of one race, enters another

As Post-Dispatch political reporter Jo Mannies reports, Missouri Lieutenant Gov. Peter Kinder has decided to drop out of Republican race to replace Gov. Matt Blunt, who himself opted to not run for re-election a couple of weeks back.

But Kinder will run for re-election, which — politics aside — might garner favor with the, uh, bicycle lobby.

As for the three main remaining gubernatorial candidates, we know at least one has an athletic background. 10 Speed himself bumped elbows a few times with Democrat Jay Nixon on the basketball court over at the police academy some 20 years ago. (Nixon was kind enough not to get sour at ol’ 10 Speed despite my numerous infractions).

Not sure about the Republican candidates. Kenny Hulshof looks fit, and Sarah Steelman is from the cycling hotbed of Rolla, so maybe she’s a Hellbender on two wheels.

This makes me respect Lt. Governor Kinder even more. He could have won this race hands down, yet he chose to put people before politics and his own ambition. That is so unusual in politicians. I can’t wait for the timing to be right for Kinder to be Governor, but now is not the time. As another Governor was said, “I’ll be bock.”
