Cancellara wins Tirreno-Adriatico
World time-trial champ Fabian Cancellara of U.S. sponsored Team CSC stayed up right Tuesday in wet, rainy and slippery conditions to win Tirreno-Adriatico.
Cancellara won the leader’s blue jersey by 16 seconds over Enrico Gasparotto of Barloworld. He took control of the race by winning the time trial in Stage 5.
Francesco Chicchi of the Italian Liquigas boys won the 176 km final stage by beating Lampre’s Danilo Napolitano and High Road’s Mark Cavendish in the sprint to the finishing line in San Benedetto del Tronto.
Twas a tough finish for High Road skipper George Hincapie and teammates Kim Kirchen and Gerald Ciolek, who were involved in a seven-man crash on the second-last lap, robbing Cavendish of a good chunk of his lead-out crew for the spring finish.
