Own a cool piece of history from the Tour of Missouri
St. Louisan Dan Schmatz is raffling off a memento of his famous encounter with an armadillo in the inaugural Tour of Missouri.
Though the armadillo took the worst of the hit (dead), Schmatz suffered a broken collarbone on the endo over the handlebars and had to drop out of the race, which turned out to be his last as a pro.
As a memento, his teammates on Team BMC got an armadillo-crossing warning sign, picked up signatures from 50 riders in the first ToM peloton and gave it to Schmatz as a gift.
Now, Schmatz is offering the sign in a raffle that benefits the Variety Club of St. Louis’s Bikes for Kids program. Every dollar donated is good for one raffle ticket, and all the proceeds go to Bikes for Kids. The winner will receive the sign, as well as a jersey from the THF Realty Cycling Team, which Schmatz heads in his post-riding career.
Only a few days remain in the raffle, which runs through March 31.
