Trail mix

Saw some weirdness on Grant’s Trail today, Twilight Zone material, all between Watson Road and Gravois Road.

– Cell phone madness: Not one but two people on bikes talking on cell phones … while riding.

I can almost excuse the teenage girl – it’s a culture thing – but she was wobbling a wee-bit while holding the phone in her left hand and attempting to steer with her right.

More scary was the 40-something woman holding the cellphone with her left shoulder and steering with both hands through the stopsign by the Grants visitor center. Downright scary, that one.

– Braking blader: The light at Gravois gives passage to trail-goers for about one-tenth of a second and I’m toolin’ to make it across and I arrive to the far side just in time to encounter the blader who’s putting on the brakes to stop as soon as he gets to that side of the Gravois. At least he apologized.

– This one almost defies belief. I roll up behind a family on a couple of road bikes and two more on recumbents, including one with a kiddie trailer on the back. It looked like three generations, with the parents and grandparents setting a good example for the wee-one. So I’m thinking: How cool is that! But then I pass the kiddie trailer and  give the dad a hearty hello, which he reciprocates after finishing the puff on his cigarette!

Well, that clinches it. Twilight Zone, it is. Dude channeling Rod Serling.

– One last note: None of the people described above was wearing a helmet.
