Yesterday was a disappointing end of the Tour de Georgia for me. With an unfortunate crash with 30 kilometers (about 18 miles) to go snapped my frame in two. (You might recall my race bike broke before Stage 2). With no spare bike behind me, my race was over. But my own disappointment turned into success for the team.
Team Type 1 had four guys in the top 20 on the big climb up Brasstown Bald Saturday, including one (Moises Aldape) in sixth place on the stage, which is a fantastic result.
So going into the final stage, it was Team Type 1’s goal to make sure no one gained any seconds to put our guys out of that position – four riders in the top 20. We also wanted to try and put one of our riders in the front group and possibly even move up on the overall standings.
Just like we have nearly all week, we got a guy in the break. Today it was Chris Jones, who has been in breakaways several times this season – in Malaysia, Taiwan and Redlands. Unfortunately, he got a flat tire and a very slow wheel change. The breakaway he was in got caught in the end anyway, so we held on to our third place on general classification. All in all, it was a very successful tour for Team Type 1.
Looking back over the past seven days, I have good feelings about the race. It was efficiently organized, had exciting racing and I’ll definitely be back.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my insight into what it’s like to compete in a major race like the Tour de Georgia. It’s been fun writing it. You can always check in on how Team Type 1 is doing at www.teamtype1.org. I hope to see you at the Tour of Missouri later this season.
