With Americans prominent on Slipstream-Chipotle, CSC and Astana, Velonews.com previewed the Giro d’Italia and suggested that an American could end up in the maglia rosa Saturday after the Team Time Trial in the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia.

Velo said it would be appropriate for an American to be in the leader’s jersey on the 20th anniversary of American Andy Hampsten winning the Giro in 1988.

Astana and CSC are two of the best time trial teams in the world, but Slipstream-Chipotle beat them both in the TTT at Road Atlanta in Stage 4 of the recent Tour de Georgia. The TTT is way cool, so it’s a rockin’ way to start the Giro.
