Reeling in: Brad Huff, Mike Lange, Team Type I, Rock Racing

Saint Louis Post-Dispatch

All righty, 10 Speed is back in the saddle after a few days of R&R, so it’s time to catch up on a few things.

– Huffie wins stage, Lange takes third overall: Brad Huff, Mike Lange and their Jelly Belly teammates had much reason to celebrate Sunday at the Tour of Arkansas.

Huff won the 75-minute Stage 4 crit, outsprinting Karl Menzies of HealthNet-Maxxis  and Mark Walters of RACE to the line for his first win of the season — in only his second week of racing. A knee injury had sidelined the Springfield, Mo., native until the Joe Martin Stage Race two weeks ago. (Huff showed up as a DNF at the Joe Martin race, but he reports on his blog that he did indeed finish the race.)

Meanwhile, St. Louisan Mike Lange finished on the podium in third overall, 39 seconds behind behind race winner Glen Chadwick of Team Type 1 and just 14 seconds in arrears of Predrag Prokic of TOSHIBA-Santo/Her. Lange finished third in Stage 2 and ninth in Stage 3 — the two big climbing stages.

– Big Tour for Team Type 1: Chadwick’s victory in the Tour of Arkansas was a big breakthrough for Team Type 1, the first victory for the first-year team. Chadwick took the leader’s jersey by winning the opening stage, then solidified it with a big win in Stage 2. The team protected Chadwick and the lead the next two days.

From the Team Type 1 news release:

“Chadwick, who had not won a stage race since the Tour of Korea in 2003, dedicated the victory to his wife, Isabelle, and their two-year-old daughter, Jade.

” ‘It has been a strange season with a pretty bad six months off because my family and I were very sick,’ Chadwick told Cyclingnews’ Kirsten Robbins. ‘To actually pull off a result like this is amazing for myself.’

“A bout with Epstein-Barr Virus sidelined Chadwick in February following the Tour of Langkawi in Malaysia. The life-threatening spinal virus even infected his daughter, forcing her to be hospitalized as well.

” ‘It was very tough for us to see our daughter hooked up to an I.V. all the time and her veins collapsing,’ he said. ‘It’s hard to explain to a two-year-old why the doctors were always sticking her with needles.’ “

– As for the Rock cats: Victor Hugo Peña won Stage 7 of the Vuelta a Colombia, 163.6 km, Rio Negro - Llano Grande Circuito - La Union. And Oscar Sevilla has finished on the podium twice — second in Stage 2 and third in Stage 5 — en route to 13th overall with five stages remaining.

That Tour of Colombia is still going. It finishes on Sunday. Fifteen days in all, I believe. Keep up the great work.

Yes, the Vuelta a Colombia is still going on, with five stages remaining. It runs through May 25. Thanks for pointing that out. I braincramped on the length of the race and have updated the post to reflect the correct info.
