In terms of sponsorship, it’s been a great week for international cycling.
Four teams — FOUR! — have garnered new sponsorship deals that significantly boost the sport.
– Saxo Bank, with headquarters in Denmark, has signed on to become the title sponsor of Danish-based Team CSC after this year, with the team being known as CSC-Saxo through this season and Saxo for three years thereafter.
– Quick-Step re-upped for three more years as the title sponsor of Belgian-based Quick-Step.
– Bob Stapleton’s Team High Road signed Columbia Sportswear as the title sponsor, beginning with the Tour de France next month. It’s also a three-year deal.
– Slipstream-Chipotle on Wednesday picked up Garmin as co-title sponsor and will become Garmin-Chipotle for the Tour de France.
Other than losing the cool names High Road and Slipstream, there’s no downside to any of these deals. Plus with Slipstream, High Road and CSC being at the forefront of the anti-doping movement in cycling, the recent deals indicate that sponsors, and therefore the public, are buying into the program and most importantly that two U.S. based teams — now known as Columbia and Garmin-Chipotle — are set financially for the next three years.
Another bonus for cyclists is you can probably find High Road, Slipstream and CSC gear with big markdowns as retailers clear now-outdated merchandise.
