Foot-Hi Pie vs. fine wine
Tough choice for St. Louis area cyclists on Sunday, with two cool rides — one to the east and one to the west.
– To the east: Trailnet hosts the Diamond Mineral Springs Bicycle Ride, which of course features routes that go past the Diamond Mineral Springs Restaurant, known for its “Foot-Hi Pies” and, according to Trailnet, “generous family-style meals.” The ride starts at 8:30 a.m. in Troy, Ill., with routes of 22, 39 and 47 miles — flat, no hills. Cost is $8 for Trailnet members, $12 for nonmembers, $3 for children, with $3 off coupons at Maplewood Bicycle.
– To the west: The Herrmann Wine Trail presents the second annual Seven Hills of Herman Ride, which is one challenging ride, with route options of 30 and 60 miles. The ride starts at 9 a.m. at the Stone Hill Winery. Cost is only $5, and all finishers get a medal, and an offer to stop at one of Herrmann’s wineries — Adam Puchta Winery,
Bias Winery, Bommarito Winery, Hermannhof Winery, OakGlenn Winery, Röbller Winery, Stone Hill Winery — for some postride libation.
So STL cyclists have a choice: Cruise on a flat ride and chow down on Foot-Hi Pies, or head to the hills and drink to your success.
STL cyclists will face a similar difficult choice in a couple of weeks with the Boeing Employees Bicycle Club’s Tour de Donut and Trailnet’s I Scream For Ice Cream Bicycle Ride, though with the rides on back-to-back days, you can do both! (And if you’re up for it, you can start out Friday night with the Tour de Belleville and make it a tripleheader.)
