Astana’s Chris Horner takes an opponent for a ride

Velonews.com has an awesome picture of something you don’t see everyday:

A professional cyclist in a bike race, out of his saddle and pedaling up a hill with another cyclist sitting on the seat behind him while lugging his own bike on his shoulder.

Happened Saturday at the Cascade Cycling Classic when Astana’s Chris Horner gave Billy Demong of Team American R.A.D.D./AGEL a lift to the summit. Both riders were credited with the same time for the stage.

Gotta love the sportsmanship of cycling.

By the way, Astana’s Levi Leipheimer leads the race after five stages with a 2 minute 30 second lead over Jeff Louder of BMC. Too bad Astana isn’t at the Tour de France, but it looks like they’re having fun anyway.

Moises Aldape of Team Type was the stage winner, his first victory this season.

I love Chris Horner!

And, thanks for reporting the times. I was wondering if both rider and passenger would get the same time.

If Horner comes to ToM, I’m gonna ask him for a ride! Hopefully not with a bloody elbow, tho.

The two photos together tell Demong’s stor: a bent front wheel, a torqued left shifter, and a bloody right elbow. I would be interested in a follow-up on this. Good for cycling, great for Chris Horner’s persona, especially with the result of the race, him being the entire support team for Leipheimer, who won the GC handily.
