Yellow bar tape, redux

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

I just can’t contain myself.

I noticed Romain Feillu’s time trial bike was tricked out with yellow bar tape. Unless the wearer of the maillot jaune is required by Tour organizers to do this, I advocate abandoning the practice. It creates bad karma.  Feillu lost five minutes and the yellow jersey to Stephan Schumacher of Gerolsteiner.

Also noticed that Valverde’s time trial bike wasn’t adorned in the colors of the Spanish flag, like his almost totally yellow road bike.

I can’t wait to see whether a humbled Valverde changes his bar tape from yellow to something less presumptuous and if Schumacher abandons the blue of Gerolsteiner. Hope not.

It hardly matters. With any color tape, that Kueen-K was a sweet bike! As much as I love watching the riding, I get just as excited about identifying the pro’s equipment.

I regretted opening my big mouth on this subject Friday morning, when I saw Kim Kirchen on his yellow bike. I felt sort of sad: “Oh, no. Not you, too!”
My reaction made me realize that I just plain don’t like Valverde and will look for any reason to spew vitriol and root against him.

Still, unless the ASO is making the leader do this, it seems presumptuous.
