“Naked” officials endorse a cover-up

Well, I was skeptical about St. Louis being party to a World Naked Bike Ride event, and sure enough, the ride is now the World No-Nudity-Allowed Bike Ride.

After meeting with police officials on Thursday, ride officials now advise “strategic coverage,” and “no complete nudity” for the oil-protest/promote-cycling ride set to start at 9 p.m. Saturday night at Tower Grove Park.

At issue is the city ordnance that includes a clause prohibiting exposure of, uh, certain body parts “which is likely to cause affront or alarm,” the portion of the ordnance likely to apply Saturday night. Makes me wonder who sets the standard of what “affronts or alarms,” and whether anyone would want to challenge the legality of that portion of the ordnance.

Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Body paint is highly recommended by Chicago WNBR.

I think it’s about time we examine what is considered obscene and indecent exposure. While I agree one should not expose his/herself to others for reasons obtaining to sexual fantasy or desire, this event has nothing to do with that. I’m not saying we all should walk around naked either. But this is an organized event that is making a very important point. And guess what, we are all born naked. We live in a backwards society that says the human body is bad, and war and violence is good. Makes no sense to me. This is a peaceful demonstration and it should be allowed to proceed as originally planned.

What a great way for St. Louis to show the rest of the world that we can not keep up. This event happens WORLD WIDE and we have to be the one community that threatens arrests to those that bear some skin. I know it may seem petty thing to complain about, but when other event organizers see that St. Louis can not allow a bit of skin to be shown for an excellent cause, they will be less likely to bring their event to St. Louis. I could even understand if this event was being associated by the sex industry, but come on –

Mayor Slay – There is more skin displayed during Marti Gras, step in and allow this to happen with out interference.

The “student” organizers state that an objective is to protest oil dependency.
This is ludicrous.
So - what are they using for tires - manila rope?
And the body paint is made from sustainable organic forest resources?

I have a constitutional right to bear arms and only arms. Legally speaking, that’s all I’m allowed to bear. If we were getting the same number of cyclists naked in say, Clayton’s Shaw Park, people would laugh it off as the rich having a fine time. However, since we are talking about a group of cyclists in a typically homosexually friendly park, the law is going to frown upon such nudity. The park is public land, as such, it belongs to all people, not just naked bicyclists, so they will have to share with the non-nude, and hope that they don’t get tackled like that bicyclists in NYC did.

leave it to St. Louis to mandate that the World NUDE bicycle race be clothed. Absolutely ridiculous!

The funny thing about everyone getting upset about St. Louis enforcing the decency laws here is that the point of the Naked Bike Ride is to attract attention by doing something that is deliberately against the law and most people would consider titillating and sexual. If it weren’t against mores and laws, what would be the point? Who would care? If your point is to raise awareness for {insert cause here}, then have the guts to stick to your convictions, and take the consequences when they are handed out.

Why do we have to be naked or even almost naked to stand for a cause?

“Ordnance” was used three times in this tiny piece…so, I’m assuming that it wasn’t a typo. Mr. Lueking, in this case you might wish to tuck an “i” after the “d” and before the “n”, making it ordinance. Ordnance, defined by Merriam-Webster means: 1 a: military supplies including weapons, ammunition, combat vehicles, and maintenance tools and equipment b: a service of the army charged with the procuring, distributing, and safekeeping of ordnance. Just thought you might want to know.

Would ordnance work now?

Found this comment on a local biking site (written about the fellow who drove from Centralia to “snap a few…”):

I rest my case -
Just in case the organizers have any remorse (as if!) about a similar waste of nasty oil…
“Oh, Gosh, Peter (no pun intended…) - we did not think about that - we thought all riders and voyeurs would walk or ride their bikes to our B.P.”

Ed note - ” B.P. ” in this context means Big Protest and does not mean British Petroleum (aka Amoco).

And I wonder if the concerned-and-caring-for-our-planet organizers had anyone calculate the gases given off (by the autos) in the getting to the park and back.
