Andrei Greipel rides Columbia-High Road freight train to win
Saint Louis Post-Dispatch
Defending champ Andrei Greipel took the first big step in his title defense by riding Columbia-High Road’s leadout to victory Tuesday in Australia.
After Columbia reeled in the breakaway of Andoni Lafuente (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Olivier Kaisen (Silence-Lotto), it brought back the late attack of Jack Bobridge of UniSA to set up Greipel for the sprint finish.
Greips beat Saxo Bank’s Stuart O’Grady to line for the win. Baden Cooke of UniSA was third, with Jacopo Guanieri of Liquigas fourth.
For those keeping score at home, three of the top four were on bikes from American companies — Greipel, Scott; O’Grady, Specialized; and Guanieri, Canondale.
