Finally, a day for the sprinters Tuesday at the soggy Tour of California, where the riders endured cold and wet conditions for the third straight day.

For the sprinters, it was finally a day with a reward, as the peloton reeled in the day’s 4-man breakaway near the finishing line in Modesto.

The new Cervelo TestTeam dominated the finish, lining up to spring Thord Hushovd for the victory and outmaneuvering the teams of the other big sprinters, Columbia-High Road’s Mark Cavendish and Quick Step’s Tom Boonen.

Oscar Freire of Robobank finished second to Hushovd and Renshaw, Columbia’s lead-out man, finished ahead of Cavendish.

There was no change in the overall race lead, with two-time defending champion Levi Leipheimer in yellow, 24 seconds ahead of Columbia’s Michael Rogers, 28 ahead of Garmin-Slipstream’s David Zabriskie and 30 ahead of teammate Lance Armstrong.

Leipheimer’s Astana team has been so strong in the ToC thus far that it has five of the top eight places, with Chris Horner in fifth, Janez Brajkovic in sixth and Chechu Rubiera in eighth.

Astana has had some scary moments. Armstrong went down after a photographer’s motorcycle went down in front of him Monday in Stage 2, and Leipheimer crashed Tuesday after crossing wheels with Armstrong.
