Cyclist Sinkewitz to pay ex-sponsor in doping case
FRANKFURT (AP) - German cyclist Patrick Sinkewitz was ordered to pay damages Thursday to a sponsor that terminated its contract after the rider tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
A court in Fulda ruled Sinkewitz must pay $127,820 to Foerstina, a beverage maker that canceled an advertising campaign of the former T-Mobile rider.
Sinkewitz tested positive for testosterone in an out-of-competition test before the 2007 Tour de France, prompting German television to withdraw live coverage of the race.
Sinkewitz was banned for one year, half the usual suspension, because he cooperated with German investigators and gave details about doping in cycling.
Sinkewitz is scheduled to return to cycling at a race in Lugano, Switzerland. His new team is the second-tier PSK Whirlpool.
