A little more than three weeks since undergoing surgery to repair a broken collarbone, Lance Armstrong has told Giro d’Italia organizers that he’ll be in the race as planned.

The Giro begins May 9 and ends May 31. Armstrong’s participation had been in doubt because of his accident in the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon on March 23.  He lost about a week of training because of the crash and surgery, but was back on an exercise bike in short order and recently has been training on the roads in Colorado.

An injury of this severity typically take eight to 12 weeks to heal, Armstrong’s doctors said in published reports. That puts him just about on target for the Giro, though with the hiccup in his training. It’ll be his first grand tour in almost four years, since retiring after winning his seventh Tour de France title in 2005.
