Petacchi wins Stage 2; Cavendish still in maglia rosa
Columbia-High Road’s Mark Cavendish started his finishing sprint just a tick late, enough to let Alessandro Petacchi of LPR Brakes jump past him and win the second stage of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday.
Still, Cavendish maintained the overall lead in the race ahead of Garmin-Slipstream’s Tyler Farrar, who was fifth in the stage.
Columbia appeared to be delivering Cavendish perfectly to the finishing line in Trieste at the end of the 156 kilometer stage, leading the charging to the line with Cavendish and the peloton in tow. But with Cavendish following the wheel of lead-out man Mark Renshaw, Petacchi bolted past and try as he might Cavendish didn’t catch him.
No worries, though. Cavendish retained the leaders jersey heading into another sprint stage, and another chance for a stage win, on Monday.
