Can blacks be ‘racist’?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Some readers, responding to my recent post about Irene J. Smith, referred to the St. Louis mayoral candidate as “militant” or “racist.” Since starting here at the Post-Dispatch, many readers have put me in that same category, which I find a bit confusing.

Is it “racist” when blacks boldly address racism? Is there a thin line between defending or promoting black agendas, personalities or issues and discriminating against whites? What are the boundaries?

I believe “racism,” as it relates to the American experience, involves an accepted system of social oppression based on the wacky notion that white skin is inherently superior to black skin. In other words, it takes power to exercise societal or institutional “racism.” Yes, blacks can be prejudiced, biased and even hateful of whites, but, without power, their position is little more than a gun without bullets.

But that’s just my opinion. Maybe this definition no longer applies in this modern age. If so, why not?

There are plenty of public discussions on this topic. I’ve included a few links below:

“Can Latinos or blacks be racists? No!”

“Are Black Voters For Obama Racists?”

“In Places Where Blacks Predominate, Can They Be Racist?”

Luke Visconti, one of two business partners who own and run DiversityInc., writes: “By any measurement of economic and political power, whites dominate our society. Therefore, black people can be bigots, homophobes, misogynists or haters of any other group, but they can’t be racist.”

I respectfully submit that nothing Sylvester Brown posits holds any merit. Does that have to do with this thread on “racism” ? No. It simply states my belief.

Then, according to Visconti only White people who has the means to personally oppress a Black person in someway and actually does it can that White person be considered a racists. Therefore, a White person who has no power over a Black person but dislikes Blacks solely due to their race cannot be a racist, but only a bigot. This theory of Visconti and others along this line just doesn’t add up in making a lot of sense to me.

And, of course like Whites, Black can be racist also, it’s only that racist Blacks are usually not in a position to affect the lively hood and freedom etc. of White people.

And, as a whole, I have noticed both racists Blacks and non-racist Blacks in positions of power White people much fairer and compassionate than they do Blacks. I think that they fear being seen as favoring another Black person so they are way more harsh towards other Blacks.

It is all just so crazy, but true. People should follow their conscience in all matters and all things no matter what anyone may think of their actions or motives.

I think when you hold preferential treatment towards any race, you’re a racist. I understand your point in this post, but I disagree. Can the Bosnian population(who are considered white, yet in other ways considered a minority) make an argument against blacks because Bosnians hold less “power positions” than Blacks? What about Latinos? When you hold someone’s race against them in judgement, you’re a racists. When you keep expectations low(or high) for some races as opposed to others, you’re a racists. If you voted for Obama because of his race rather than his qualifications…you’re a racist. To me there is no difference in promoting a black or white agenda…they are both racist agendas…because your putting race more important than the person.

Correction:

And, as a whole, I have noticed both racists Blacks and non-racist Blacks in positions of power {treat} White people much fairer and compassionate than they do Blacks

Sylvester…

Yes, Blacks can be racist. Making it about power splits a hair that is meaningless. I would argue the definition more than anything. I would define racism in terms of race based hatred of a group of people. And, in that sense, blacks can be very racist, and even amongst themselves.

When I hear or read a black writer make a blanket statement, such as you did about “whites have all the power”, then you are branding me, an individual white man who feels most days like a gear in the machine with minimal power of my own, with a wide racist brush. When a black performer (I hesitate to call a lot of Rap as music, sorry) spews hatred at “The Man”, that is racist. Oh, and that performer, has plenty of power, and he’s not using it very wisely.

I could go on, but any conversation about healing our racism MUST require the same behavioral standards across all classes, groups, and races of people. If you’re going to demand that whites stop using derogatory language towards blacks, then you better be demanding that blacks stop using blanket derogatory language towards whites. It’s that simple. It’s racism within the black community when getting an education, dressing well, behaving politely in public is allowed to be labeled as “acting white”. If the “N” word is derogatory if I use it toward you, Sylvester, then it is also derogatory when one black person uses it towards another black person. What’s confusing about that?

Mr. Brown,

Leftists have attempted to redefine racism to include only whites by narrowing defining it to include only the majority. Even before Mr. Obama was elected President, it is simply ludicrous to state that blacks do not have power. How about the obvious examples of Oprah, Tiger Woods, and Colin Powell? In addition, blacks received a vastly disproportionate amount of government benefits compared to taxes paid. Could a powerless group of people accomplish this enormous wealth transfer? How about the amount of violent crime committed by black? Powerless?

The above argument is just to demonstrate how ridiculous Mr. Brown’s definition of racism is when a person thinks about it. A much more coherent definition of racism is the belief that a color of a person’s skin determines their character. A racist refuses to view a person as an individual. Instead they are only a member of a defined group. Viewing people as only a reflection of skin color allows racists to rationalize things such as “affirmative action” which is really only racism with a fancy name. This is the insidious racism that allows Mr. Brown to blame individual white people for acts committed by anyone with the same skin color.

Mr. Brown I know you are puzzled by the charge but you are indeed a racist.

Let’s get one thing straight. Euro-Americans don’t give a damn about someone’s skin color. Many bake in the sun all summer long or go to tanning salons to make their skin as dark as possible. If they love their white skin so much then why are they going to these extremes to making their skin look darker? There are many Euro-Americans especially those with Spanish and Italian heritage whose skin is darker or as dark as light skinned Afr-Americans. Yet they are classified as white(European) and the light skin blacks as blacks(African). Really what we are talking about is European or African race as there are many more identifiable difference besides skin color.

Race hustlers such as Sly have one goal. Demonize Euro-Americans, victimize Afr-Americans. Make Euro-Americans out to be most ignorant racist people that have ever walked the face of the earth. Keep it up Sly, whites need some fire in their belly. You make our arguments so much easier.

When Are WE going to get over it?

How about when you stop writing about it daily? How about stop reporting everything with color in mind? How about reporting about a person’s character instead of talking about his color first? Liberals are obsessed with race. Frankly, I am tired of hearing about it and live every day with you race obsessed people. Why do we hear “The First African-American” whatever? Why cant we hear Michael Steele is now the chairman of the Republican party?

You only separate people with the hyphens. You only separate people with color. How long are you going to point all this stuff out? Perhaps when it doesnt work for you?

But that’s just my opinion. Maybe this definition no longer applies in this modern age.

Nice try. No matter if it is your opinion or anyone elses the “definition”
you speak of has never existed. Does “racism,” as it relates to the American experience, involve an accepted system of social oppression based on the wacky notion that black skin is inherently inferior to white skin?

Screw waiting on a validation of certain people to make you feel better about yourself.Tell me I am worthy, recognize me,make me feel special-who has time for that? Integrate yourself.

Most people could care less what color you are.Can you produce? Can you get along with people? Are you hyper-sensitive?Do you have alot of issues?O.K. your in.

Defending or promoting black agendas, personalities or issues? Are you kidding me?

Show me one area of life;black/white, rich/poor, social/professional,or whatever;that it is my right to enter another persons arena of life(that they have established by their efforts or their risks or their associations}, with an agenda, and DEMAND they accept my personality and be sensitive to issues that I may have.Who, in any setting, is going to respect that? The only ones I know of that have an outright blatantly open white agenda are supremacy groups. Not a large % of the population.

Am I denying that there are not a lot of prejudice bigots out there? No ,but they usually have a much larger basis for discrimination than just race. You cannot legislate morality.

Mr. Brown

There was a Black man name Richard Onion Horton who was on the radio here in St. Louis, WGNU 920 they had one of your ex employees Liz Brown on there also.
Horton had the same notion that Blacks can’t be racist because of no power. I want everyone, most whites to remember that the new Attorney General Eric Holder is Black and watch how he and his office goes after groups that have a different opinion then the Group called African Americans. Those groups will be made up of mostly Whites. I wonder if all the Race hustlers like Sly Brown and others of his ilk will change and say all people can be Racist?.

Mr. Waker opined “And, as a whole, I have noticed both racists Blacks and non-racist Blacks in positions of power {treat} White people much fairer and compassionate than they do Blacks”

Reason is this, The HNIC knows how and what blacks think and how they “Not all” are always looking to take advantage.

HS opined:”If the “N” word is derogatory if I use it toward you, Sylvester, then it is also derogatory when one black person uses it towards another black person. What’s confusing about that?”

It’s the POWER over whites that Blacks think they have when Blacks complain of the use of the “N” word I hate that word because of its true meaning.

I had a black co worker tell me once Why Blackman likes driving Cadies.
“It’s our ability to have something nice and the white man can’t take it away” If you think I made that up you be wrong.

Here’s another gem out of his mouth.
Sex and Black men. They try to bed down as many women as possible because the white man has taken everything from them, so what’s left is sex.
Ps he also said I swear to ya all he said “Getting a white woman is Blackmans way of getting even”
