Black man kissing white woman causes stir
On the cover of today’s Go! magazine, a regular section of Friday’s Post-Dispatch, there is a photo of a couple kissing to go along with the story “The 7 Best Places To Smooch”. The story hasn’t generated a ton of buzz, but the photo has. Why? Because the man is black and the woman is white. The reader comments at the end of the online version clearly showed us that at least some folks out there are not comfortable with interracial relationships.
Here are a couple of examples:
From 1buschstadiumplz: “Haven’t read the story but dont like to see blacks and whites kissing;”
From taxpayer came this remark: ”This doesn’t surprise me at all. Libs take every opportunity they can to shove miscegnation in our faces. Now that TV has to show blacks in every commercial, notice that they are always posed beside a blonde woman. Not a brunette, a blonde. Its done for shock value. Sickening that a once proud newspaper would resort ot this. Joe Pulitzer is turning over in his grave in shame.”
Reader greggh tried a middle-of-the-road approach: “I’m not judging the concept of biracial couples at all, but in a city as racially polarized as St. Louis, I’m shocked that the PD would go so out of its way to be so gratuitously provacative. This completely undercut the message of the article.”
“You people make me sick! What a disgustingly racist community we live in. My husband is black, I am white, we have beautiful children and we are both educated. We teach our children tolerance and acceptance of others, even the meth smoking, trailer park rednecks portrayed in these comments. Keep your nastiness to yourself!”

Doug Moore has been a reporter with the Post-Dispatch since February 2000. For the last two years, he has covered diversity and demographics.
There is only one race… THE HUMAN RACE! I see two people kissing and find it beautiful. If you don’t have the inteligence to understand that we are all the same… which is why you can take the organs or blood from any human being and transplant them into any other human being, then your are an animal.
How sad. It continues to amaze me how astoundingly uneducated vast swaths of this country remain. Racism, anti-gay sentiment and the like are the product of a lack of education. Clearly, many St. Louis residents, along with many people in the rest of the country, need some serious help.
Love is hard to find. When you find it, embrace and relish it!!!
So, “taxpayer” - if your Momma and Daddy get divorced, are they still brother and sister? And who gets the double-wide? Oh, so you don’t like my assumption that you’re ignorant, low-life, white trash. Maybe I ought not to rely on stereotypes, and neither should you.
Iconoplatic Rage.
As a Member of the GOP a somewhat Bush supporter and a black man married to a white woman for 30 years. Please resign from the GOP. You give us all a bad name.
A mixing of the races is what we need. All people should realize that there are no pure race humans in the world. Somewhere along the line in all of our families there is that proverbial mouse in the shoebox. I am proud to say that I am not pure negroid. My wife is polynesian and arab. I am negroid, sioux and french. My kids as a result are heinz 57.
Oh, and a black man and white woman kissing? We have 3 kids. Guess we did a lot more than kiss. LOL!
Congrats to the PD staff-you finally found a lively subject for this dead from the ground up blog site.
Yes, I misspelt your name on purpose. Or did I? Maybe because I have been up for 20 hours protecting your way of life. Now, it is time to bet some sack time after a lousy frozen pizza to go out and do it all over again tommorow. I still miss green.
I am still sitting here at my desk with my mouth wide open! I am not a naive person by nature, but I am shocked that people in 2009 seriously would even waste a minute of their day bothered by seeing a man and woman kissing because they are not the same race. are you kidding me? where do these people live and work, because i am a white woman from saint charles, and a middle class citizen working in the professional world, and I do not know people that close minded or ignorant. you have the right to your opinion, but I just cant believe the things that i have read. with all the viloence in saint louis you would think that seeing two people, no matter the races, kissing, you would be glad for something less violent. It just saddens me.
I’m amazed there is this much ignorance and intolerance still thriving at such a level in STL. It’s small wonder, given the simple outcry over such a picture, that people outside the area give this town little regard. When too many denizens still act like ignorant, uneducated backwater hicks, it’s difficult to overcome the perception. I find myself cringing when I tell people I live in St. Louis, just because I realize there are people out there who live under this kind of cultural shroud. If you don’t like the races mixing, don’t be a part of it yourself; but spare the rest of the world your brand of social fascism.
Yep, I always gauge a city’s pulse by message board, where the loud, stupid, angry, muckraking, b.s. indulging, pot-stirrers congregate. Journalism is dead. Long live our “reality” tv, er, news.
