NAACP, unlike Congressional Black Caucus, applauds slavery apology

The U.S. Senate support of a resolution offering a formal apology for slavery has not gone far enough for some members of the Congressional Black Caucus (see previous post), but the NAACP is happy with the action.

The head of the NAACP sent out a statement this morning to the media applauding the action today by senators and is urging the House to follow suit.

“The apology for slavery and the era of Jim Crow segregation is long overdue and is the first step toward healing the wounds of African-American men and women throughout this country,” said NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous.

NAACP’s Hilary O. Shelton, vice president for advocacy, said the resolution “creates a watershed opportunity for Americans of all races, ethnicity and national origins to better understand the historic racial challenges of our nation and work together to craft a solution to the remnants of racism still lingering in our society.”

There is no mention of reparations in the NAACP’s statement.

I have lived in and worked in the “black” community the real black community, I’m talking about everyday people. Most blacks will reveal themselves of their true nature once you gain their confidence. They as a group Hate white people, make no mistake about. THEY assign blame for their failures on a white system that in their opinion has kept its foot on their neck from the passé to the present. When you say
“Your comments seem to indicate a dislike for the black community as a whole” Your statement is not factual, and is an assumption. I hate no one. I judge people by their actions.

The overall importance the black community places on its lack of success in this society on whites, is in my estimation, boarders on insanity.
We all know what the definition of insanity is.
Make no mistake, they as a group fail and will continue to do so, so long as they continue down this path of self destruction.

See my comment #38 (I think) on the previous post. I think, to many non-African-Americans (and to more than a few African-Americans) the whole issue here IS about guilt and blame.

At some point. the guilt and blame have to stop. On virtually any topic posted here relating to anti-black discrimination, it always rolls back to black victim-think. The problems, particularly in the ghetto, of the black community are ALWAYS laid at the feet of white slaveowners and their presumed descendants.

Sorry, folks. It’s time to accept that the past is what it is. It’s not a fair world. Remember that every time you point a finger at someone, there are three pointing back at yourself.

HS

What you say is true! But the problem really is the people of the same ILK such as Doug Moore, Steve Parker, Kurt Greenbaum and Jean Buchanan.
They set the tone on this blog and have to much influence on how people see the black community. If they wrote the truth as the truth, then the rest of those out in everything is OK land to see, then issues could be addressed.
We have met the enemy and it’s our press. They have on this blog delete countless post because they deem them unfit, because they pointed out failures of their pet group Blacks. You can’t solve problems unless you discuss them no matter how unpleasant they maybe. They deleted my posts and others not because of Language, but because of content.

PS
If any of you think we have FREEDOM of the Press you would be wrong.
The only people whom have that freedom are those who own the press!!!!

I wonder if says anything about the 500,000 white men who lost their lives in something called a civil war that freed the black man? After all, it was the black man who enslaved is own race and first sold them to the Arabs and then the Europeans in the slave trades. Black on black slavery still exists today all over Africa.

500,000 white men dead freeing blacks? Nope. Union battle deaths, 110,070. Union deaths from disease: 250,152.
Confederate battle deaths: 94,000
Confederate disease deaths: 164,000
In the first place, the war between the states was not about slavery. It was an economic war that Lincoln made to be about slavery to keep the funding in place. Typical politician! Did this war free us? In name only. We were still lower class citizens until the mid 1960’s. As a free and equal people we are only 45 years into our “Adult” lives. Sorry if some of us still act like kids and want to be fully acknowledged.
How would you feel if you still remembered being shoved aside and being a second class citizen? It hurts man, to this day. I try to ignore it, I truly do. But it remains in the back of my mind all the time.
When I go somewhere and people stare at me or security follows me just because of my looks. A small percentage of us are criminals, just like all the other races. We good folk are damned sick and tired of this. I will say this cause I know the comment is coming. You whites can not change your dregs to good people. How do you expect us to change our dregs to good people?
So yes, in my long winded way, I have changed my mind. I said before the apology is un-needed. I now say, about damn time!

I have a few problems with this apology.

First, it does nothing. It is a waste of time and resources when the government should be focusing on real issues.

Second, it is a silly thing for a government to do. It is a sign of weakness for the country and demonstrates that really these politicians are in the business of pandering instead of doing.

Third, it isn’t the final step. Black racists will want more. Reparations will be demanded. Money, land, power will all be asked for, and knowing this weak government, they will be granted.

The Civil War ended slavery. The civil rights movement tore down those final barriers. Today, any one of any color can succeed. To dwell on the sins of the past only serves to deepen the racial divide.

Thomas Franklin,

OK. So my numbers may not be exact. I am sure the “disease” was from infections due to having limbs cut off with a plain hack saw. Those were white limbs not black.

The emancipation happened in 1865 at the end of the civil war and immediately ended slavery in the South. So obviously slavery had something to do with it. Regardless of the fact, the black man enslaved the black man and the white man freed the black man. Of course the white man also participated in the slave trade. I’m certainly not denying it.

I come from Slavic ancestry which is where the word slave originates from. My ancestors were slaves just like yours except I don’t think about it because everyone’s ancestors were slaves at one time or another. It’s existed on every continent and like I said before still exists in Africa today. The fact is that the American slaves here were far better off than the slaves in Africa or for that matter most Africans today. At least they got fresh water, a roof and food.

There is ONE major thing that all blacks are forgetting and I think its about time someone brought it to your attention!! IF THE WHITE PEOPLE, OR WHOMEVER, HAD NOT BROUGHT YOU TO THIS COUNTRY WHERE YOU LIVE IN FREEDOM, ETC. AND THE ONLY PROBLEMS CAUSED ARE THE ONES YOU CAUSE YOURSELVES, JUST THINK WHERE YOU WOULD BE NOW!!! YOU WOULD BE TRAMPING AROUND IN THE JUNGLE, AND COOKING YOUR FOOD ON A CAMP FIRE, FIGHTING WITH SPEARS, BONES THROUGH YOUR NOSES, ETC., AND LIVING IN HUTS OR SOMETHING LESS INVITING! NOT TO MENTION BEING ATTACHED BY OTHER TRIBES, PUT INTO SLAVERY BY YOUR VERY OWN! So, get the he$$ off your soap bench and tank the good Lord you are HERE and not over there being chased by a tiger or something! This slavery bull has been shouted for far too long! And, if you want people to like you, then stop doing the things you do that make people DISLIKE you! Again, all of you that were slaves, please step forward!! It is now a joke and a worn out one at that!

And, another thing, stop using that crutch as an excuse for doing what you do! It’s always ‘poor little ole me’ - everyone is really tired of the same old song and dance that has been yelled for years and years, and is STILL being used because you are taught it by your parents, grandparents, in order to provide you an excuse for not taking responsibility for your own lives! I don’t owe you one dang thing, and neither does any one else. And, if you continue to ‘feel sorry for yourselves’ as ThomasFranklin apparently indicated because of something that happened years ago - then get over it! It’s time to grow up and become an adult and stop looking for a free ride - you will be looking up from below before I agree with anyone apologizing for something they haven’t done! Again, stop looking for a freebie all of the time, and pay your own way! The past is dead, so bury it and forget it!!! Get a life - your own!!!
