Black kids booted from pool told they might “change the complexion” of private swim club in Philly

This story from the NBC affiliate in Philadelphia caught our eye. More than 60 poor kids in a summer day camp were turned away from a private swim club in which they had paid to get in. The camp director says it was because the kids are black.

This quote from the club president would seem to support that claim.

“There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club,” said John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club.

Those folks at the Valley Swim Club don’t get out much. That John Duelser sounds like a real winner. Both this story and the link by stlarch50 show that some people live on the very tip of consciousness, never considering the world as a whole.

I agree stlarch50, if they stretched out to Philly to find this story, why didn’t the one in Ohio also “catch their eye”…??? It does go both ways. These people actually got assaulted on their own property. And I would assume private clubs ARE private clubs so they can maintain their racism, again both ways, sexism, age discrimination, income bias, etc. that’s why I choose not to go to places like that. This mob incident (I lost count at 30 or so) happened to me and my two kids right in Spanish Lake, of course I had no phone to call the police, so it was never reported, but I had to pretend I was calling 911 to get them to leave.

Yeah….I Agree that the media makes these issues sound more one sided than it is. I hope that the link mentioned by stlarch50 get the attention it needs to assure that that type of behavior doesn’t happen again.

Anyone notice that it was a “private swim club”?. Did the kids pay to get into the club or did they simply pay the “day camp” a fee? Perhaps the “day camp” did not check with the club ahead of time to agree upon the number of campers that could be accommodated in addition to the regular club attendance? A “private” club is well within their rights to allow access to whomever they choose and to determine the occupancy numbers. Not saying this is what happened, but we all know how incomplete and inaccurate local paper reporting can be, do we not?

This type of thing still happens more frequently than we know. Often the institutions find a way to make sure use is invitation only.
The problem I see is the useless demands for apologies and admissions. At this point the city, parents and other human rights agencies should challenge the club’s not-for-profit status and have it revoked.

Didn’t know that? Country clubs, private recreation centers and the like get not-for-profit, as in tax free, status even when dues are $100,000 a year or more.

That place needs to close and suffer a consequence to send a message to all the others.

i don’t think the quote by the president is enough for racism charges. Perhaps there is more that isn’t being reported. Based on this, I could imagine any of the following scenarios:
- staffing ratios might be inadequate
- the pool is primarily used by adults for lap swimming and 60 kids are too many to maintain an adequate number of laps
- the pool has a capacity limit and members are being turned away because capacity is too often met
- the club has an atmosphere of calm and quiet which 60 kids would disrupt

And of course it could be about race, income, language, rough housing, or any number of other things.

Edgestl: “Often the institutions find a way to make sure use is invitation only.”

Yeah, that’s pretty much the definition of a private institution. My private home is open by invitation only, too.

I realize that the earlier posting lacked some details so I’m looking for other accounts as well. Here is another including a photo slideshow.

So Doug, will you also feature the Ohio incident and ask questions like “Why a group of black youths spontaneously attack white?”

The two incidents, the one reported and the one in comments are not the same.

The incident with the so-called black gang of kids is a bunch of kids seemingly attacking this family, but until more is understood, or the investigation is more complete, there’s no way to really know why this happened. There’s only one side of the equation in this story.

The other incident with the pool not only has multiple witnesses, it has the statement of the swim club president, as well as the refund of the money the kids day camp paid for them to have access to the pool. That one is very hard to refute, and very much has racist overtones.

Regardless, you can’t “counter” one incident of racism with another and say, “Well, you covered this one but not that”, so somehow it doesn’t count.
