Black kids booted from pool told they might “change the complexion” of private swim club in Philly

This story from the NBC affiliate in Philadelphia caught our eye. More than 60 poor kids in a summer day camp were turned away from a private swim club in which they had paid to get in. The camp director says it was because the kids are black.

This quote from the club president would seem to support that claim.

“There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club,” said John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club.

Karen A,

These children where in a day camp where this day camp paid for these Black children to have use of this private club’s swimming pool.

Doug Moore posted a link containing more details above in the comment section. I assume that you missed it, here it is:

Furthermore, the private pool club’s President stated the below as the reason that they were refunded their money:

“There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club,” said John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club.

Nothing like a racist fool who is so racist that they can’t even see anything wrong with their actions nor the words that cometh from their wicked hearts out from their lips.

Don’t we need to give both reporters some credit for checking out some of the questions some of you have asked. I think if there was some “provocation” of the mob in the Ohio incident there would be some mention of that. This is Akron, Ohio not Arab, Alabama.

I also think the comments by the president of the pool club are unbelievable. What world do some of these folks live in. I suppose Sasha and Malia Obama would change the complexion of the pool too.

This country still has a whole bunch of work to do when it comes to race.

The thing in Ohio, while heinous, is NOT THE SAME THING!!!! The white family was not barred from an event they had pre-paid to attend because of the color of their skin. At the same time, the black kids were not harshly beaten because of their skin color.

The white family is a crime victim, where the crime happened to be perpetrated by black folks. It is anecdotal and not evidence of a trend.

Again, both are heinous. They are both race-based. One was racial discrimination. One was race-based violence. But they really are apples and oranges.

I think the point of posting the Ohio story was not say that this story was not valid but to point out that 9 times out of 10 this blog covers racially charged stories about African Americans. Several times people have asked when this blog will be about more then one race. If you go back and count the stories you will see that the majority are about African Americans. That is not to say that they shouldn’t be covered, but it does seem like the writers of this blog are not actively seeking out stories of racial discrimination against other races. Sure there are a few, but no where near the amount there are on African Americans.

Please don’t say that this is most likely because Africans are discriminated against more. There are stories about racial discrimination from all angles everyday in this country.

What the person who posted the Ohio story wants is some…Diversity.

It’s time to start packing!

When I say ‘packing’ I don’t mean a suitcase. If you see a gang (because without the gang you have cowards), then get an equalizer and be ready! This attack on the Akron family is unforgivable!
As far as the swimming is concerned - a private club means exactly that, it means in order to use the facilities you MUST be a member and pay dues. For kids or the camp to assume you can use these facilities is really a big mistake - and to refuse entry is not racial, but a right any “Private” club can exercise, the beauty of belonging to one! Besides, there are plenty of public pools kids can go to - you don’t need to invade a place where people pay a lot of money to belong and then be invaded by non-members who DON”T pay dues!

STlarch - you stole my thunder. I was going to post that hate crime not reported in the PD or this blog for discussion (imagine that). Well, at least two of us are informed regardless of what the P-D doesn’t report.

Did anyone watch Olbermann tonight. He reported that this Duesler fellow is an Obama activist in Philly with some left-wing peace group. I thought that was interesting. Sorry to disapppoint you D Walker that he isn’t some right wing nut job.

CENTRISTS,

That doesn’t change the fact that this man fell into the whims of his racist members. He is just as guilty. Are you so immature as a grown-up to understand that fact? (lol).

Creative Steps, Inc. of Philly is just seeking attention and damned if they didn’t get world wide attention. Creative Steps, Inc. has a terrible reputation in Philadelphia. They use innocent children and exploit the poor kids to make Creative Steps stand tall. They go to a lilly white neighborhood of people who want to get away from blacks and look what they get, a call of racism. Talk about block busting they will follow you. This is a sorry day in Philly. It gives the city a black eye; why didn’t the Creative Steps Director just shoot all the whites like she has threatened to do in the past with other people.
