Religious groups to tackle racism this weekend
On Saturday, St. Francis Xavier College Church in midtown will host a discussion on “Racism in St. Louis: The Challenge to People of Faith.”
Vicki Simon, director of social ministry for the church, located at the corner of Grand and Lindell boulevards, said the collaborative inter-faith effort will focus on the history of racism in four areas - housing, employment, education and the criminal justice system. The goal, Simon said, is to develop ways ”to eliminate some of the barriers that exist today.”
In addition to St. Francis Xavier, the workshop is sponsored by St. Alphonsus Liguori “Rock” Catholic Church, Third Baptist Church, St. Charles Lwanga Center, St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church and the Institute for Peace and Justice.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The session is free, although sponsors are requesting a $5 donation. A catered box lunch is availalbe for $12. For those who want the lunch, please contact Simon at 977-7309 or at vsimon1@slu.edu. The session is expected to last until 3 p.m.

Doug Moore has been a reporter with the Post-Dispatch since February 2000. For the last two years, he has covered diversity and demographics.
The focus could be on business ownership just as well. It is high time the powers that be stopped leading the downtrodden into the arms of their oppressor. Racial minorities should be encouraged to take a piece of the pie for themselves. I fully understand the need to restrain those that have too much as it is. But I think the less affluent should be encouraged to get some for themselves. If we are going to be victimized by capitalism we should fully enjoy the benefits of it. The poor are forced to pay for the lavish lifestyles of the rich they should focus on getting some for themselves.
I don’t think its across the board racism we are talking about when it comes to foreigners. I am a foreigner and speak very little German, have lived here 3 years, and am treated really well. The problems with foreigners I think has a lot to do with culture, and skin color. I easily transitioned into German culture and being of European descent I blend in walking down the street.
Racism for sure exists very strongly here, but on the topic of immigration, culture is a huge player in integration, especially any non-western culture.
YOu know one place that practices reverse discrimination is the National Guard. They cater to the blacks no matter what. There have been lots and lots of white males that were smarter and had gobs of leadership experience and knowledge, but because an individual was black they promoted that individual over the white male. Naturally the National Guard will deny it or say they are investigating it, but this happens on a daily basis in every program in the National Guard
bigtalldude-I agree as I’ve seen it but the case in particular I’m thinking of a promotion went to a female over a man with more time in grade/service than she did. The guy just accepted it and didn’t rock the boat “for the good of the service.”
From Today’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
‘TEEN SHOT TO DEATH IN VACANT LOT, GUNMAN ON LOOSE
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
11/10/2009
UPDATED, 9 a.m. Tuesday
ST. LOUIS — A teenager lying in a vacant lot was shot to death Monday night in the 2000 block of East Grand Avenue, police say. The victim was identified Tuesday as Laron Johnson, 18, of the 3900 block of Palm Street.
The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. Monday. Police say they don’t know who the shooter was.
Witnesses told police that they saw a man wearing dark clothing standing over Johnson, firing shots.
The gunman then ran off down an alley.
Johnson was taken to a local hospital, where he died. He had been shot several times.”
When the religious groups get together this weekend, I hope - and pray - that they’ll discuss this story. It’s an event that occurred less than three miles from St. Louis University. It’s a story that’s not all that different from similar stories I read about in the Post-Dispatch almost every day.
Sadly, I doubt they’ll address this story - because it’s PRECISELY the kind of story that keeps ‘racism’ alive. Racial suspicions are NOT kept alive because of ‘housing, employment, education and the criminal justice system.’ Racial suspicions are kept alive because young urban black males keep murdering people, usually other black males - and people, regardless of ethnicity or gender, are fearful.
St. Louis could be a beacon of hope the day they the citizenry seriously addresses the obvious.
The Judeo-Christian value sytem needs to be taught - no, drilled - into the students in the public schools of our city. Moral absolutes need to be inculcated. They can’t be ’segregated’ - or regulated to the ‘back of the bus’ - in our churches. The media poisons our youth every single day with their ‘religiously’ morally relativistic garbage.
Groups can get together all they want and pretend that the great evils of our day revolve around racism in housing, employment, etc. The day when these good people ask themselves how our children stop getting poisoned by the moral rot that’s being taught to them via the schools, the music, the radio and the television will be the day when REAL racism begins to disappear.

how nice if it were implemented. Not going to happen, to much money to be made promoting the victimization of a race of people. Better prison, more PSYCHOLOGIST and of course the best excuse is, its the guns fault.
thegoviskillingme,
The root of the problem concerning racism in this society stems from having too many people who have unclean filthy hearts that are incapable of loving thy neighbor. That is the root of this countries problem in every facet and corner of this country. Injustice in America is the root of all the problems that you witness in America.
Filthy dirty hearts are only capable of feeling that any compassion and attempts to help and right things as promoting the victimization of a race of people.
Filthy dirty hearts feel that the only solution to the effects of injustices against a race of people is to build more prisons and throw away the key on Blacks for the same type crimes that Whites get a slap on the wrist for in comparison. Only fools cannot see that the only thing one have in any society is what it has reaped. It is the law of cause and effect, I guess only those possessing true goodness within can see this.
We have a system that is bigger than any person that promote these injustices and it will take many people with the right set heart to change things. Then, we will see some changes and this country will be blessed because of it. Hopefully, people in America come to their senses before we reaped all the curses that we have bestowed upon ourselves in America.
