Preventing tragedies

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Lou Holtmann says Monday’s dedication of new median cable barriers on Interstate 55 will mark a “significant milestone” toward safer highways.

Holtmann lost his wife, Teresa, his daughter, Cristen, and his sister-in-law and nephew in a July 1996 crossover accident on Interstate 44 near Stanton, Mo. They were killed when an eastbound truck crossed into westbound lanes and hit their minivan.

Today, he’s president of the nonprofit group Citizens for Safe Medians, that raised money for new guard cables on Missouri interstates. The group donated $55,000 toward guard cables on I-55, and has raised about $140,000 overall for the cable work.

“These things certainly prevent significant accidents and deaths,” Holtmann said from his home in Branson. “You can tell from all the strikes they’ve gotten.”

Missouri Department of Transportation officials will mark completion of work on this I-55 guard cable project on Monday afternoon in Herculaneum. Representatives from congressional offices and local lawmakers are expected to attend.

According to its news release, MoDOT and its contractor installed the cable barriers in gaps along the the I-55 median area between Route M and Route 67. Work began in November and wrapped up this month.

I really have no opinion on the median cable barriers in and of themselves. I do have an opinion on what seems to be a media blitz about this subject. Almost every paper in the state had done at least a story or two on this subject. I can only think that someone at MoDOT is putting a bug in your ear. The thing is….I don’t trust such bugs.

Or, more or less, do we have to be beat over the head with this subject? Is this being done to approve the funding for this no brainer project? Makes me wonder what we aren’t reading. Like who owns the company that makes/installs these barriers for the state?

Are you serious? Do you really believe that MoDOT is doing this as a plug for some company that makes the barriers? If you would read old articles you would see that cross over accidents on interstates have decreased due to the cables. Just look on I-70 in Warren County. The fatalities due to crossovers have become almost non-existent since the guard cables were installed several years ago. I would rather read about something being done to improve safety than hear about another accident.

“Do you really believe that MoDOT is doing this as a plug for some company that makes the barriers?”

I think it’s in the realm of possibility. Do you consider it coincidence that virtually EVERY paper in the state has covered this topic in the past few weeks? Do you think I care if you are “irritated”?

I think you missed the point of my original statement. If they are so great (which I believe they are) just DO IT?! Why the hard sell?

Why is positive press considered a hard sell?

Isn’t it fair that a successful program should deserve as much positive press as MoDOT’s flaws get negative press?

I think they deserve kudos when they do something good, especially in light of how they are vilified for anything remotely bad. If the successes aren’t touted, then the public concentrates on the failures which makes for a bad situation when MODOT has to come begging for more money to keep Missouri’s residents safe.
