St. Louis drivers earn failing marks

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Men’s Health magazine has come out with new rankings that show St. Louis drivers are the second worst motorists in the country - behind only Columbia, S.C. and earning an F along the way.

According to a brief item on its website, the magazine crunched numbers from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Governors Highway Safety Administration and Allstate Insurance.

It looked at fatal accident rates, including those caused by excessive speeding, and data on speeding, accident frequency and seatbelt use.

Kansas City also received a failing grade and Southern cities held down seven of the 10 worst. The best city, according to the Men’s Health rankings, was Des Moines, Iowa, where drivers earned an A+. (Also earning an A+ were - gulp - New York City drivers).

The fact that two Missouri cities made the list may come as a surprise to some. Missouri highway-safety officials announced recently that statewide traffic deaths had dropped to a 14-year low.

Here’s a link to the article on the Men’s Health web site.

I am from Iowa and I completely agree with St. Louis drivers getting an “F”. I have lived here for 6 years and I have never seen driving this bad anywhere.

Fully agree. I have been born/raised in St. Louis, and after visiting other cities, you realize how bad it is. We are the only city in the world where people think you hit your brakes to merge on the highway.

St. Louis drivers are pretty bad. It couldn’t be related to the fact that drivers education is optional here, no possible way!

I’ve lived all over the country and the drivers are no worse here than anywhere else. Drivers in Southern California and Arizona are far worse. Wasn’t it just last year that St. Louis placed in the top 10 for most courteous drivers in the nation? These “studies” are all meaningless anyway.

I agree Mark; these “studies” are meaningless — apart from being a revenue stream for those who conduct and sell them. I’m not from St. Louis and I’ve spent plenty of time driving in a few different states. It’s no worse here than Texas or California, IMHO.

I’ve traveled extensively. The worst drivers are in Atlanta and almost every city in Texas. In Florida, red lights are just suggestions. I didn’t find California drivers to be bad. In fact, given the amount of traffic, they’re kind of polite.
St Louis has bad drivers but let’s not generalize because of just some of the drivers.

Hard to know who are THE worst but Lou drivers are terrible, run red lights frequently, physically challenged by size of their vehicles, and are constant speeders. One of the main problems here is the lack of law enforcement and too much beer drinking. Another serious problem is the worshipping of highways by leadership and MoDOT.

I totally agree that our driving deserves an F. It was not always this way and it gets worse every year. Drivers act as if red lights are signals to speed up to get through the intersection. I am totally in favor of red light cameras. We don’t allow others to merge into “our” lane. I turn on my blinker and rarely does a car me to move over. We St. Louisans frequently talk on the phone and drive. We may think we are driving okay; however, when the car is weaving, slowing down for no reason, or tailgating my car, I look at the driver. Sure enough, there’s a phone up to the ear. Like others, I have driven elsewhere. While I’ve seen some of the same bad habits as ours, I have never seen them run red lights or exceed the speed limit as much as we do. I’m just venting. I doubt if there’s anything we can do to improve our score.

STL drivers are no worse than any other big city. Good luck in driving in Dallas or Atlanta and praying don’t hurt either in these cities.
My biggest complaint with STL drivers is they do not know what accelaration and decelaration lanes are for. Some drivers think the minute they are next to the highway they have to enter the far right lane and if that is not available they hit the brakes AND I have even had them come to a complete stop. There is a reason those lanes are so long and there is not a yield sign, it is to give you time to reach highway speed and merge!

We may have the worst drivers - I can agree with that (it’s called the ‘St. Louis Get Your Head Out of Your A*% Syndrome’), but I will also say that we have the worst transportation department in the world. MODOT is not a transportation department anyway, it’s a highway department, and whoever designs their intersections, medians, and stoplight systems in particular looks like they must have had trouble even getting their GED. They place some signals in the middle of intersections instead of on the side where they should be (IE at Clarkson Road & Baxter) making left turns a choice of hitting the signal or the vehicle next to you, the signal heads (the actual green-yellow-red squares) are not placed evenly unlike in Illinois, which looks sloppy and unprofessional, sometimes you get an arrow; sometimes you don’t, some of their signals are old & rusted hulks that are real eyesores, and I could go on forever. Simply put, the signals themselves look like they are maintained by a bunch of rednecks. Also, I find certain new intersections like the one at I-270 and Manchester confusing and even dangerous. Booo!
