St. Louis drivers earn failing marks
Men’s Health magazine has come out with new rankings that show St. Louis drivers are the second worst motorists in the country - behind only Columbia, S.C. and earning an F along the way.
According to a brief item on its website, the magazine crunched numbers from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Governors Highway Safety Administration and Allstate Insurance.
It looked at fatal accident rates, including those caused by excessive speeding, and data on speeding, accident frequency and seatbelt use.
Kansas City also received a failing grade and Southern cities held down seven of the 10 worst. The best city, according to the Men’s Health rankings, was Des Moines, Iowa, where drivers earned an A+. (Also earning an A+ were - gulp - New York City drivers).
The fact that two Missouri cities made the list may come as a surprise to some. Missouri highway-safety officials announced recently that statewide traffic deaths had dropped to a 14-year low.
Here’s a link to the article on the Men’s Health web site.

Missouri drivers are the worst. I think they all get their license at KMart. Seriously, I don’t think, until recently, Missouri drivers ever had to do behind the wheel training. I’m sure Missouri drivers don’t know what that is. That is a class that all Illinois drivers have to take. When I was going through the program it was 10 hours behind the wheel, with an instructor. Missouri may have adopted a program like this recently. I would like to welcome Missouri to the 21st century.
3 things:
1. First and most important, the left lane is the fast/passing lane. It’s not the lane you drive in 20 mph below the speed limit while you’re talking on your cell phone. If you see a driver behind you…GET OVER!!!!
2. Cars have blinkers, use them!!
3. Red lights mean stop, not go. Green lights mean go, not sit there for 20 seconds and then go.
I’ve lived in IL all my life and moved to St. Louis about 3 years ago. I wholeheartedly agree! Even Chicago drivers are better than St. Louis ones. Maybe it’s time to make driver’s ed a requirement!
It takes a lot to make the drivers in Boston or Manhattan look good by comparison, but St. Louis drivers manage to do just that. I’ve lived in St. Louis for over 20 years (after living in 5 other states and driving in most of the lower 48 states) and I have to agree that St. Louis drivers are the worst of all of them.
Stop signs, lane markers and turn signals are apparently only vague misunderstood ideas to the average St. Louis driver.
I was born and raised most of my life in Los Angeles. I have lived here about 10 years now and it is ridiculous! STL has the WORST and most uncourteous drivers I have ever encountered in my life. I’ve never been tailgated, cut off, or cussed out as much as here, and for no reason. Do you people think you are going to get somewhere even 15 minutes earliler by driving so recklessly? The only place you’re going to get to faster is your grave! BE CAREFUL
I agree 100%. We moved here from Indy, and Missouri people can not drive. They stop when they are getting on the highway, slow way down when there is a drop of rain, and do stupid stuff that could get people killed.
I work for a local auto body shop an would agree in full. God love job security
Trucks are a HUGE problem. Missouri in particular does not seem to want to pull them over, and how many times do we read about highway deaths caused by and involving large trucks. They follow too close and drive too fast and seem to have Care Blanch with law enforcement. I travel some and it is not like this everywhere.
I’m reminded every morning on my way to work how bad drivers are. I was born and raised in St. Charles county and learned to drive on rock roads. I can sense drivers in my area that came from the city. They don’t know what a yellow line means or what the speed limit means that is located below warning signs. Stop signs don’t mean stop and right turn on red is the same as a green arrow. I have worked and traveled in nearly every state in the Union and have traveled overseas. Even the Autobahn seems tame compared to the way drivers speed in the St. Louis area.
Agree. If any of you St. Louisans are in denial, just drive down the road when it is raining. You’d think large rocks were falling from the sky. I’ve never seen such awful drivers. And I’ve never seen so many people cut into turn lanes and exit lanes at the last second as people do here. It’s idiots like you that cause backups.
I would say most of my experiences driving in St Louis have been positive with many courteous people. But there’s always a few who think they’re the only ones on the road and wouldn’t know a right-of-way from a one-way. But I will say I believe, in this area, Illinois drivers are just as bad as Missouri drivers. St. Louis doesn’t have a monopoly on morons driving automobiles. Missouri and Illinois need a “no cell phone use” law the same as what California just passed. St. Louis is just terrible for morons driving with a cell phone glued to their ear.
