Hanley-Eager connector opens today

The Hanley-Eager Road intersection, one of the area’s most notorious traffic chokepoints, will get a new look - one that transportation officials hope will keep traffic moving.

Missouri transportation officials and St. Louis County leaders will be on hand this morning to mark the opening. But the so-called jug handle interchange isn’t expected to be open to motorists until the afternoon, said MoDOT spokeswoman Linda Wilson.

The new connector does away with the traffic signals at the intersection.

Missouri, Gateway Constructors and St. Louis County teamed to add the interchange to the Highway 40 contract. By adding the $5.8 million project to the Highway 40 (Interstate 64) contract, St. Louis County won’t have to do the work in the future.

Here’s a link to a map showing how the new jughandle interchange works.

Watch for updates today on STLToday and details in Friday’s Post-Dispatch.

Its sad that this is ready to go but they wont open it until after a ribbon cutting ceremony. I sit in this mess a couple times a day, glad to see it open back up.

I wonder what the comments will be, it seems more of an efficient way of directing traffic. Also, I wonder if the Best Buy, Sports Authority storfront has gained or experienced financial hurt from this operation. It will be interesting to see if someone does a study on that area after the Eager road opens up.

This appears that it will work nicely once people are used to it. Unfortunately, a very real problem remains and that is getting people off of 170 South onto Eager Road (especially heading East on Eager). The traffic at that exit backs up until it affects 170 South and adds to the congestion danger for the people wanting to go West on 40/64. Maybe this will get better once Eager flows better near Hanley. And it also may get better once 40/64 Eastbound opens up. We shall see.

Hanley-Eager gets a $6 million project paid for by the county to improve a single intersection. Meanwhile, not a word about fixing the obsolete and frighteningly dangerous exits and entrances from eastbound 270 in north county.

For those of you who don’t drive in north county, here’s how it works: When you leave eastbound 270 at many of the exits east of 170, the exit is several blocks before the indicated road, and crosses both lanes of the outer road diagonally. The first thing you see when you exit is a lane of oncoming traffic coming straight at you. And to get on the highway, you turn diagonally left on a 2-way street, facing oncoming traffic just before getting onto the ramp. It’s the most horrible setup I’ve seen anywhere.

Thanks, Charlie!

The verdict is out until I give this a try tonight. This has definitely been the worst points of traffic congestion that I have experienced. I mean first you have all those people cutting in at the last minute which just ticks me off. Then you have that stop sign around the corner on Dale avenue where the Brentwood police set up shop to bust people for rolling through. Yep, opening this up will help, but I simply can not wait until the highway is repoened, I am figuring at least 30 minute improvement in my drive time.

The “jughandle” looks as though it’s going to be more efficient for drivers heading west on Eager from Dale but unfortunately for those of us coming south on Hanley to Eager west the route is now more difficult. Too bad they couldn’t find a way to keep Hanley south’s former easy access to Eager.

Bravo!

Hopefully the directional signage will be well-planned and well-lit.

I can’t wait for this to be done! The traffic that was diverted to Meridian Dr. was insane. Apparently there are drivers in this city that need to retake their driving exam! Listen here people — pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks! I’m sorry that you are upset that you had to sit in traffic on Hanley so long that you can’t stop at the crosswalk or that you feel so entitled that you can drive through the loading zone area (clearly marked by the way) as well. I’m amazed that no one was seriously injured because most people driving through could care less if they hit someone. I only wish the cops gave out more tickets than they did!

AMAZING! Why don’t we just keep this closed a little longer and let EVERYONE get their picture taken at the intersection. Is a ribbon cutting ceremony really necessary? JUST OPEN THE DAMN THING!!!

About time, been a mess for too long.

Watch for all the accidents as Dale drivers turning right on to Hanley will fail to yield to people going north on Hanley (who have the right of way) whom are taking the jughandle exit.

And Brentwood police will set back and watch it all happen, they do nothing to enforce driving laws of all the idiot drivers in this area
