Crews build a concrete barrier wall near McCausland Avenue on Highway 40.

The main highway lanes have been poured. Thousands of feet of concrete barrier walls are in place.

In a matter of weeks - 11 at the most - the eastern half of Highway 40 (Interstate 64) will reopen to motorists, capping a two-year reconstruction project. The work closed portions of a major highway many consider St. Louis’ Main Street linking downtown with the western suburbs.

“We still have lots more to do before the deadline of December 31st,” Dan Galvin of Gateway Constructors said during a brief tour of the work zone today. “But the big pieces that you drive on, those are completed.”

No formal reopening date has been set. Not yet.

But Galvin said the highway contractors are confident they can hit the end-of-year deadline. The more they get done between now and then, the less likely they’ll have to block of lanes to finish up odds and ends in early 2010.

“The weather is always a variable,” Galvin said. “If we continue to have a lot of wet weather, that’s going to slow us down some.”

Look for the video tour of Highway 40 between Interstate 170 and Kingshighway next week on STLToday.

I think Mr. Leiser intended to say, “In a matter of weeks -” and not “in a matter of weeks.” Who’s editing before articles hit the screens?

Looks like you need to take a little of your OWN medicine, Missy. However, I thought the same thing….

Also, “block of lanes” should be “block off lanes”. Yep, nothing better to do this morning than proof read a PD article. :)

A friend who works at MODOT says 40 will “most likely” reopen either November 23rd or November 30th… it would have been several weeks earlier except for some graded soil collapsing near Hanley during the summer.

I think Carol intended to say “In a manner of weeks” and not “in a matter of weeks” at the end of her first sentence. How’s that glass house, smarty pants?

Split the difference and open on Nov. 26. With a parade. Maybe even a corporate sponsor. Happy Macy’s Day, everybody!

You know what would be nice? If pompous internet commenters would quit trying to act like editors or proofreaders. Hey Carol…you made a mistake of your own “matter” instead of “manner” See how easy it is to make a mistake?

Looking forward to having better access to the fast food restaurants off Hampton.

God bless the folks who are gonna open this highway in November. I can’t wait to use a faster route to Downtown. Close down the main street for 2 years….genius, right?? I used that highway for 2 years and there was nothing wrong with it.

I noticed that the countdown sign near Forest Park Parkway has gone dark… good news?
