Driving around a roundabout

In Sunday’s Along for the Ride, we told you about the problems drivers are having at roundabouts at the new Spoede Road/Highway 40 interchange. Both circles (on the north and south side of 40) will be getting quite a bit more traffic next month when the closed section of Highway 40 reopens. In the interest of everyone, we thought we’d post a demonstration video on how to use any old roundabout, as well as an animated example of that one in particular.

Here’s a video from MoDOT on navigating roundabouts:

Hmmm. Does that ramp leave sufficient acceleration time after navigating the roundabout? Absurdly short ramps was, after all, one of the main problems with the old 40.

Why don’t people use turn signals in roudabouts? When you do use them to exit, people know which way your going insted of stopping. It keep traffic moving.

Wow, how many bad/drunk drivers will get on the highway in the wrong direction? Who came up with this monstrosity? So instead of getting rig of hairpin entrance ramps, we added a roundabout to them? They should have realigned the bridge to the west or bought out land to the east for a decent entrance ramp. Or better yet, just shut it down and let people use Lindbergh.

Sounds like a good idea to me. However, first, drivers need to be educated as to what “yield” means. At Olive and Lindbergh, yield evidently means “Get out of way, here I come” regardless of traffic conditions.
