Southbound lanes of the Jefferson Avenue bridge are finally open, after more than a month of being restricted to northbound only.

The City of St. Louis and its contractor reopened southbound lanes Friday afternoon. The city opened northbound lanes in December so at least part of the bridge would be open when the eastern section of Highway 40 closed. The bridge is not 100 percent finished. “There are still fnishing touches to be done,” said Todd Waelterman, city streets director. In the spring, crews will put plantings in the median. They’ll also be repaving a section of Jefferson from Choteau south to tie into the bridge.

That job could have been done faster in my opinion. Glad to see it is finally getting there.

It’s about time!! This project took far too long, and had too many people pointing fingers at each other. I know that I’ve whined about it on this forum before. I do not believe that the project managers, if you can call them that, at the Streets Dept are experienced enough to deliver projects on time. Like I said before, the upcoming Grand Blvd project will never be completed in 10 months, if the current Jefferson Ave example is repeated.

I agree that Jefferson took too long. The streets in the metro area are beyond disrepair.

I wish that the paper would spell check. It’s Chouteau.
