More on the shutdown effect

The monthly report looking at how the Highway 40 (Interstate 64) shutdown affected July traffic came out this morning. For the most part, these monthly reports don’t change much. However, July’s report showed a few interesting things. The department reports that traffic patterns have changed some due to school being out, a boom in transit use, and people trying to save on gas. Expect traffic to pick up as gas prices drop and schools resume later this month.

Clayton and Ladue roads are the two that continue to carry much, much heavier traffic than they did in the fall. Traffic wasn’t as heavy as it was in June, but it’s still quite a bit heavier than pre-shut down.

Clayton Road at Lay Road has 19 percent percent more cars heading eastbound and 112 percent more cars heading westbound during the morning peak. Ladue Road at Warson Road, traffic heading eastbound during the AM peak was 134 percent heavier in July than in the fall; heading west, it was up 77 percent.

“Clayton and Ladue roads are the two that continue to carry much, much heavier traffic than they did in the fall.”

And Richmond Heights and Clayton have done almost nothing (it appears) to adjust the timing of the lights, westbound in the morning and eastbound in the evening. Clayton and Hanley and Clayton and Brentwood are especially ridiculous.
