The day before the New I-64 opens, bicyclists will have a chance to ride it. The St. Louis Regional Bicycle Federation put out more details today on Ride 64 — the Dec. 14 bicycling event on the rebuilt section of Highway 40. Bad news for you procrastinators. The Time Trial hosted by Big Shark is sold out. It was limited to 150 riders. The fun ride, however, is still open. It starts at noon and ends at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14. The ride will start and end on westbound lanes of 40. Enter the highway on the westbound side on bicycles only where 40 intersects at McKnight Road or at Ballas Road.

The t-shirts are cool. Proceeds from the ride will help by bike racks in St. Louis and St. Louis County, and will help support the Bicycle Federation’s work toward better bicycling. The cost of the fun ride is $25 for adults, $10 for children 15 and under. Toddlers pulled in a trailer ride free. Register before Dec. 3. For more info, visit St. Louis Bike Fed.

We have to pay to ride our bikes on the highway? You have got to be kidding.

My understanding is that there are organized activities on the westbound lanes and general strolling about on the eastbound lanes. The charges are only for the organized activities that are using one side of the highway. The other side is a free free-for-all.

Spec is correct. The highway will be open to the public from noon to 3 p.m. The westbound lanes are for organized activities that come with t-shirts. The eastbound lanes will have horse drawn carriage rides, walkers, dogs, kids on bikes, etc. No motorized vehicles though. The organized activities cost money, the unorganized activities do not.

Elisa,

That is great news. I am glad that the freeway will be open … for “free”! Thanks for the follow up.
