The Missouri Department of Transportation broke ground today on a $1.7 million project to build and improve existing sidewalks along Lindbergh Boulevard and New Halls Ferry Road in North St. Louis County. Federal stimulus funds are paying for the work.

The department awarded the contract to XL Contracting Inc. of St. Peters, a minority-owned firm that’s done work for the state in the past. MoDOT has come under fire recently for not awarding more stimulus contracts to minority-owned firms.  ”MoDOT’s been behind us and they’ve really pushed for us to succeed,” said Ken Novel, president of XL.

The project involves building sidewalks on both sides of Lindbergh from north of Dorsett Road to St. Charles Rock Road, and from south of McDonnell Boulevard to Interstate 270. Bus turnouts will also be added. Sidewalks will be upgraded on News Hall Ferry, between Lindbergh and I-270. All work is to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and should be complete in May.

What a waste of money. Nobody is going to be using those sidewalks on Lindbergh. As Elliot Davis says…. “You paid for it”.

If they would have given me the 1.7 million, I would certainly have a lot more to show for it than unused slabs of concrete.

Yes, by all means, let’s not build any sidewalks. Because no one walks there now (where there aren’t any sidewalks), it only stands to reason no one will EVER walk there.

Have you ever been to that section of Lindbergh? Sidewalks would be useless there. You need to think a little before commenting Mr. Moniker Mocker.
