The cost of your commute

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

A story in today’s Post-Dispatch cites a survey that indicates people are turning to transit because it’s cheaper than the cost of gasoline and parking. Metro has a feature on its website that allows you to plug in your commuting distance and your fuel efficiency. It then calculates your monthly and annual commuting costs. Mine seemed a bit inflated, but the calculator also factors in insurance costs, on top of wear and tear and gasoline.

I think Metro Link is good, it would be great if it actually when to more places where people lived so they could use it. Most people at the air port or casinos dont have to commute everyday, yet, this is the main route for metro link. Also, they need real security at the park and ride lots where catalytic converters( contain platinum) as well as gasoline is being stolen from cars that are parked in the lots. They do all this from under the cars where its hard to see them. Cutting off the Cat converters, cutting the rubber fill tube from the gas cap to the tank and draining the gas, or even just puncturing the gas tank itself and draining your gas. Not just stealing, but damaging your car. And its not a isolated incident either. So kudos for St. Louis attempting to be a commuter friendly city, but they have a very long way to go on getting PT to the people who need it, and to the security of the park and ride lots.

Metro doesn’t connect to Madison county, Il where I live so it’s a no-go. I’m not sure I would want to ride it anyway with some of its clientele.
