Road tripping

Gas prices are high. But airline tickets are higher. All the more reason to hit the road and visit some must-see landmarks, like Mount Rushmore or the Washington Monument, right?

Apparently, fewer Americans are hitting the road for the old faves. Results of a survey released by Greyhound show that road trippers are more likely to travel for pleasure, not to see national treasures. Only 19 percent of us have been to Mount Rushmore, 27 percent have seen the Liberty Bell, and 35 percent have been to Niagara Falls. Fewer than half (42 percent) of Americans have been to our nation’s political nerve center to see the Washington Monument.

However, more than 60 percent have been to Florida. The second-most visted state is California, making Disney World and Rodeo Drive our new national monuments.
