More gas pains

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Record $4-a-gallon gas prices are popping up in the Missouri half of the St. Louis area.

The overnight 15-cent jump in a gallon of gasoline is just in time for Dump the Pump Day, a national campaign promoting the benefits of public transportation.

Mike Right of AAA Missouri said there are a “whole basket full” of reasons for soaring gas prices. But while the demand for gasoline is on the rise globally, there are indicators that show U.S. demand has leveled off or even gone down in recent months.

But he said nothing happened overnight to warrant the 15-cent increase to $3.999 at many gas stations. It may have reflected a new shipment that came in at a higher price.

“There’s nothing in the underlying indexes that suggest that these prices should be where they are at,” Right said.

Prices already were above $4 a gallon in the Metro East, where consumers pay additional taxes at the pump.

Metro marked Dump the Pump Day by distributing 10,000 free one-day passes prior to today. People had to call the transit agency, log on to Metro’s website or visit a participating bicycle shop or Metro store around town.

“The phone was ringing,” said Metro spokeswoman Dianne Williams. “The goal was to get new riders and I think we did that today.”

I handle gas prices with a debit card.

Since I\’ve not gotten an answer yet to the following question, I\’ll try here.

What should a gallon of gas cost?

These gas price discussions are just blather. No one really knows the actual value of a gallon of gas yet everyone says it too high. Higher than what?

I would like to know why in Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, the price of a gallon of gas is around .15/gal. Why are they not affected by futures, political problems and world trade.

Is the gas subsidized by the government or is it siphoned off before hitting the market?

If the US was in the same position, would we also be paying 15 cents or would Big Oil sell to the highest bidder and we would still be paying 4-5.00 a gallon?

I bought a 49cc single cylinder scooter that gets over 100mpg. I look stupid on it, but my wallet doesn’t feel stupid.

I bought a Scooter too!
And I love it!
I don’t look to stupid on it either.
It may go slow up hills but when a fill up is 4 dollars, people can go around!

I feel I’m being made to choose between feeding my family and buying gas.

The price of a gallon of gas is creeping up on the hourly mimimum wage!!So every dollar our kid earn goes right in the tank how sad.

We pay more than the saudi and other oil producing countries’ citizenry, because it cost more to ship the oil to the US. We don’t produce enough in the US to support our habit, although we could if offshore drilling hadn’t been curtailed by Congress.

I use a gas credit card at the pump, so I only pay a monthly bill. Before allowing it to curtail the food budget, I’ve curtailed the discretionary spending.

I would like to buy a scooter but safety concerns me, and with school out, I am transporting a 10-year old to and from camp, and I sort of like have layers of metal surrounding us with some of the people on the road.

Alright, so I currently work at a sandwich shop as a delivery driver. I have worked previously for Pizza Hut for a number of years and Domino’s. When a first started back in 2001, the average tip was $3-5. A gallon of gas was around $1.30. I could put $10 in my Ford Ranger, work a 4 hour shift and still have gas to drive on for the next day or two. Now I drive a 93′ Toyota Camry which gets around 20 miles per gallon in the city. Two months ago I was still working at the same Pizza Hut that I was in 2001. However, I would easily burn $10 of gas in a 4 hour shift and people were still tipping the same as they were 7 years ago and it’s not like the price of pizza has gone up. So somebody tell me what the deal is. Are people just cheap now? Bad tippers? Do they really think that the 90 cents we get for a delivery is enough? Are they effected my the economy the same way I am? Why do I get a $5 tip from a poor white family, but get stiffed by a wealthy minority family? How come Orlando Pace stiffs me on a $30 order when he makes millions…is it cause he can’t afford gas for his pimped out SUV? Remember when Hurricane Katrina hit and the prices all jumped and they said it was because the drilling sites in the Gulf got hit? Well, it’s been 3 years and the prices never went back down. These people are raping us because they know we’ll pay the money…we have too, or else we can’t get to work, perform our jobs, pick our kids up from school, go to the store, or visit familys living distances away. I think alot of this all has to do with greedy politicians that are rich and have the money to afford high gas prices. Drill in Alaska!! The arctic has a very large untapped abundant amount of oil! These high gas prices are causing us to put it as a priority everyday and taking away from the things we should be focusing on. Please comment back, share your thoughts or cuss me! Peace, love, and unitys!
