Park illegally in Illinois, pay through the nose

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

If you think gasoline prices are high, consider the cost of illegally parking in a handicap  spot in Illinois. The state has started fining drivers $1,000 for trying to get away with this. Before this month, the fine for taking a handicap spot without a disabled plate or placard was $500. First time offenders still must pay $500. Second-time offenders are fined $750. Subsequent offenses are $1K.

The fines also apply to people who use someone else’s handicap placard to park closer.

It is a good idea. People need to respect areas for the handicapped. Now they just need to crack down on people who have tags that do not really need handicapped stickers. Too many people have the stickers when they do not even need them.

The turn of prhrase is “pay through the nose,” not “pay out the nose.”

I applaud Illinois for taking this stance.
However, boos to Jim Jasper. Who are you to judge who is worthy of the placards or plates? Not all disabilities involve a wheelchair, a walker or is readily visible.

One thing that always gets me is that people assume that if you can walk on your own two feet then you shouldn’t need a handicap tag. There are plenty of diseases (COPD to name one) that are invisible to others, but have extremely limiting effects. Try to remember this when you are looking down on folks walking slowly away from their car parked in a handicapped spot.

Thanks

Fair enough, no problem. Now, how about the abusers who park in the handicapped spot and then sit in the car while the perfectly able passenger hops out and jogs into the store?

$1,000? Ridiculous! Then they should levy a $1,000 fine against handicapped people that park in regular parking spaces, or that obstruct the flow of traffic in the store, or park that silly electric grocery cart right in the middle of the aisle in the grocery store. When will the handicapped be held accountable for their actions? Just because you’ve had a run of bad luck doesn’t mean that I owe you anything or that I should be inconvenienced for your sake.

I do not like it when people that do not have drivers licenses park in the spots. There are lots of cubans where I live and they should not be allowed to drive because they are not Americans.

Fat is NOT a handicap - park in the back, waddle to the store and lose the weight. …and the motorized carts in the store — it’s never someone with a crutch, or a leg brace, it’s a 500lb. behemoth blocking the cookie isle.

Well, it does appear that more and more people who are “seniors” or over-weight are getting those blue tags. If they really, honestly need them….fine.
But I have a hard time with the often-heard attitude of being older or portly as a disability and everyone owes them.
Hey, I’m getting older and I’m a few pounds over, but no one else owes me a thing because of that.
Many seniors don’t get enough movement and the heavy sitters want to do just that……sit. Let them park far away and get some movement!
