Camp Day 3: Finding our way around (updated)

By now, the players and coaches have pretty much mastered the logistics of the Concordia campus, which can be a bit confusing. As is the case in much of the North, every building is connected so that on wintry days, one can avoid going outside. But that creates for some challenging, maze-like journeys.

Perhaps most significantly, the reporters here finally have figured out the shortest route from the media work room to the dining hall. We must have our priorities, you know.

The Steven Jackson Watch:

*Days out: 3

*Practices missed: 4

*Fine total: $45,000

Tight end Randy McMichael has been heavily involved in Al Saunders’ offense since the spring. In the early portion of training camp, he’s made a bunch of catches, several downfield. None was more impressive than a grab down the middle in Sunday afternoon’s practice.

McMichael not only hauled in the ball despite tight coverage, he also caught his helmet when it popped off his head. That drew applause from the crowd at Concordia U.

“That was strange; I don’t know how it happens,” coach Scott Linehan marveled. “You should get style points for that.”

Notes & quotes:

>>DE James Hall has been lights-out. He obviously isn’t planning to forfeit his starting job to first-round draftee Chris Long without a tussle.

>>Backup QB Trent Green struggled with his accuracy Sunday after a couple of on-target days.

>>P Donnie Jones, who grew his hair long during the offseason, again is sporting a shaved head. But before going au naturel, Long sported a mohawk for a day, which prompted some nasty shots from his teammates. “I might have to get a toupee,” Jones quipped.

>>The 11-on-11 sessions have been spirited, with the defense shining Saturday and Sunday.

>>Just visiting: former major-league slugger Larry Hisle; Washington U. assistant coach Israel Byrd, a Parkway Central grad who is a coaching intern here.

All for now. . . more from Monday’s two-a-days.

Things are looking good so far. Jackson has made his point, but now needs to think about his team, get back to camp and let his agent work on a long term contract

If Steven Jackson is such a good team player, why isn’t he practicing with the team. Seems he is more worried about his contract than he is the team. Isn’t that why he hired a new agent? To NEGOTIATE?

At Sunday’s practice, I thought: Chris Long was average; Donnie Avery did not get to show his speed; Keenan Burton looks like a keeper; Dante Hall is no way 5′8″ (try 5′5″); Brown had trouble with a 50 yarder (maybe too soon for that); Randy McMichael was excellent and all over the field; the defense bested the offense, especially in the ground game; Pisa is genuinely a nice person; and, I thought Bulger was generally pretty good. I do wonder about the Rams’ depth and their ability to absorb injuries to any of their key players. Thanks for your informative articles.

Jackson has turned out to be a punk. I never could stand his upright running style, The only time I’ve ever seen him run with true authority was in some commercial. Chavous and Brown are antiques ie. old and breakable. Linehan is a Magoo. Setterstrom and Romberg are nothing more than training camp dummies on a good club. Holt and Who for wideouts? Glover is still starting? Wroten missed a drug test? McMichael is thinking he’s gonna get out of Max Pro and catch a pass? I’ve been a fan for a long time (mid 70’s) and this might be the nadir. Bruce is within the NFC West? Playing for the Niners? Martz is in the NFC West? I’ll wake up any minute and…. where’s Toto?

I was at Sundays practice as well, Dante Hall is a big man, Meyer must not be 5′8
