Camp Day 3: Finding our way around (updated)
Bill Coats
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

By now, the players and coaches have pretty much mastered the logistics of the Concordia campus, which can be a bit confusing. As is the case in much of the North, every building is connected so that on wintry days, one can avoid going outside. But that creates for some challenging, maze-like journeys.

Perhaps most significantly, the reporters here finally have figured out the shortest route from the media work room to the dining hall. We must have our priorities, you know.

Tight end Randy McMichael has been heavily involved in Al Saunders’ offense since the spring. In the early portion of training camp, he’s made a bunch of catches, several downfield. None was more impressive than a grab down the middle in Sunday afternoon’s practice.

McMichael not only hauled in the ball despite tight coverage, he also caught his helmet when it popped off his head. That drew applause from the crowd at Concordia U.

“That was strange; I don’t know how it happens,” coach Scott Linehan marveled. “You should get style points for that.”

Notes & quotes:

>>DE James Hall has been lights-out. He obviously isn’t planning to forfeit his starting job to first-round draftee Chris Long without a tussle.

>>Backup QB Trent Green struggled with his accuracy Sunday after a couple of on-target days.

>>P Donnie Jones, who grew his hair long during the offseason, again is sporting a shaved head. But before going au naturel, Long sported a mohawk for a day, which prompted some nasty shots from his teammates. “I might have to get a toupee,” Jones quipped.

>>The 11-on-11 sessions have been spirited, with the defense shining Saturday and Sunday.

>>Just visiting: former major-league slugger Larry Hisle; Washington U. assistant coach Israel Byrd, a Parkway Central grad who is a coaching intern here.

All for now. . . more from Monday’s two-a-days.
