Jackson owes Rams $181,392 . . . and counting

MEQUON, Wis. (Camp Day 12)

For the record, Steven Jackson, who is holding out for a contract extension, is being fined exactly $15,116 for each day of training camp he misses. The total reached $181,392 Tuesday, the 12th day of camp. Jackson’s salary for this season is $1.7 million.

When the defense was dominating — and the offense struggling — in the early days of training camp, wide receiver Torry Holt wasn’t concerned. He’s learned over his nine years in the league that it takes time for a rhythm to be established, especially with a new coordinator and a new system that relies so heavily on timing and precision.

“It’s not really about the defense. And that’s not to discredit our defense,” Holt explained. “But it’s really what we do offensively, as far as our efficiency, our play-calling, our reads, our routes, our blocking schemes, our pull. That’s really what it’s about, and we’re trying to stress that to the guys. As long as our technique is sound and we’re playing fast, then we give ourselves a big shot.”

And sure enough, the offense has hit its stride and has been functioning smoothly. Which just proves that you just can’t fool the vets.

The temperatures in Nashville figure to be as much as 10 degrees higher than in Mequon. Rather than be concerned, coach Scott Linehan is actually looking forward to practicing in the heat.

“We need it,” he said. “I think our conditioning is good, but there’s still going to be some good time to train and compete in the heat.”

Notes & quotes:

>>TE Nick Cleaver, an undrafted rookie out of New Mexico State, has caught just about everything thrown his way.

>>CB Fakhir Brown, out since the first practice with a slightly torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder, has begun light weightlifting.

>>Although Chris Draft has returned to the field after suffering from back soreness, Quinton Culberson continues to work with the first team at strongside LB.

>>St. Louisan Brandon Williams is picking it up after a slow start to camp. The WR made a nice catch in the end zone of a long pass from QB Bruce Gradkowski in team drills Tuesday.

>>With the solid performance of rookies Chris Chamberlain, David Vobora and Marc Magro, third-year LB Tim McGarigle is in a serious fight to save his job.

All for now . . . more Wednesday from Nashville.

Jack,

Ever go to a Cards game in the early 90s? Cards fans showed what they thought by NOT GOING. Don’t spew stupidity. Look at the attendance facts before making a statement. BEARS??? How long has it been since they were good? Packers? They spent a LOT of years being really bad. They fans keep showing up and they stay bad.Thanks. You just proved my point for me.

So, according to you, people aren’t real fans unless they are stupid. Look up what the word bandwagon means, if you can read. I didn’t say not to be a fan. I said showed management that they can’t get away with that crap.

Like I said. A man’s worth is his word. Who wants a lead like that? I didn’t say he wasn’t a good player. Just said what he’s worth. Apparently, you can’t understand that. Big surprise there.

Im with the rest…….his butt needs to be on the field. He made his point and he has a contract! I don’t see where some of you see him as a leader. He has done nothing but mouth with no action. He is nothing but a determent to the team. Trade his a-s for a 1st round and let another team deal with the premadona!

Chris,

Yes, many Cards games in the 90’s.. and thier attendence was still in the top 10 the whole decade, BECAUSE we have “some” real fans.. Do your homework.. You say bears and packers were terrible for a long time, yet thier fans are always there, no matter what.. Don’t just assume because thier not YOUR team they’re stupid, they’re not, they’re what your not, REAL fans..

Your supposed point is that anyone who goes to a game, keeps thier seat, and roots for thier team no matter what is stupid.. I think many would disagree, just ask any St. Louis Football Cardinal fan why he went to the games all those 4-12 seasons..

Was i stupid for not missing any Rams games in 95, 96, 97, and 98? or selling off my seat? Whos the freaking fool? lmao..

I prayed for a team after the Cardinals left, and i got one.. I be damned if i take part in thier leaving again.. you go ahead and call all 25,000 real fans who went to those last few games last year stupid. They and i know it wont be because of us if they leave 5 years from now…

So i want to ask you one more time if this is your opinion, (your stupid if you go to watch your hometown, favorite team, the team you prayed to get in 95, if they arent that good)?

BTW, you called them terrible last year in that earlier trainwreck of a post, another point that i havent even touched on yet.. Would you mind filling me in on all the injuries my team endured? and why they were so “terrible”? Its my belief that when your hurt, you should be helped back on your feet again by your supporters, not kicked in the friggin teeth by them, as you did…

Kirk

He was #2 in the league 2 years ago in all purpose yards, last year he lost his offensive line by week 3… No action?

WTF?

You lower paid Steven Jackson critics make me laugh. You don’t know what you’re talking about. ‘Cause none of you ever had a PSC (look it up if you don’t know what it means).

You think the Rams can play a 16 game season without him? Hardly.

Repeat after me.
Star players outrank team presidents
Chipper, the sister, and Stan will cough it up soon.

If contracts in the NFL mean nothing, as Burwell wrote the other day, then maybe the NFL (or all sports for that matter) doesn’t need LONG-TERM contracts. Have only ONE YEAR contracts (with some guaranteed signing bonuses) and negotiate new contracts every year based on PERFORMANCE. In the real world workers get MERIT increases based on performance. The old argument that athletes are motivated by winning and that they play the game because they love it is bulls_it.

Kirk-

That is the most ignorant statement anyone has posted about this subject yet.

The fact is if Steve is serious about this then consider him an ex Ram. He will hold out until week 8 or 9, come back, play out his contract and sign with a team that will actually value him.

Do you think Jerry Jones would ever do something like this to a star player?? What a joke…

Do the Rams need Jackson on the field? Yes. Do the Rams need to sign him to a long term deal to keep him here before he hits free agency? Yes. Does Jackson need to find a filter for his mouth? Yes.

I’ve been a huge Jackson supporter since he has been here and on most Sundays you will see me in my 39 jersey. But Jackson is a hypocrite. He calls out the fans for not being loyal, but where is he right now? His absence is especially amusing considering he was without an agent for most of the offseason after his previous agent fired him, making it imposible for the Rams to negotiate an extension with him until Eugene Parker was hired right before camp. And why would an agent fire a top three RB right before he was set for a big payday? Maybe Jackson’s demands were unrealistic or maybe he was tired of dealing with Jackson’s family, who is very hands on.

Recently, Jackson also called out his receivers for not blocking downfield for him. Isn’t this the same guy who whiffed so badly on a block during the Arizona game three years ago that it put Bulger in traction for the rest of the season? As I recall, Jackson was pulled from that game in favor of Arlen Harris because he couldn’t block my grandmother. Maybe Jackson can learn to pick up a blitz during his downtime. I’m sure Bulger (who has never called Jackson out) would apreciate it.

The bottom line is that Jackson is not perfect, neither or the Rams and neither are we as fans. The deal will get done. Jackson will be back. And all will be forgotten when he breaks his first big run of the season against the Eagles.

I hate to say it, but this is Eric Dickerson all over again. We have the best back in the league and we are squabbling over money. The man wants to play, is the face of the team, is a bulldog in cleats, is the main cog in a new offense. Pay him for what he has meant to the team and for what we expect from him in the future. We have no chance of being a playoff team without him. Let’s not repeat past wrongs. Get it done.

Isn’t it about time to go get Shaun Alexander out of the moth balls and give the mann who wants a job - a job! I think this much (arms spread out shoulder width apart) less of Jackson right now.
