Mixed preseason results for Rams

How to judge preseason results? The Rams certainly had a mixed bag.

They were blown out in Tennessee 34-13, edged the Chargers 7-6 in a sloppy game at the Dome, pounded the visiting Ravens 24-10 in a sharp outing last Saturday, then rallied in a 21-17 loss to the Chiefs on Thursday night after trailing by 18 points early.

Perhaps the most positive aspect was injuries, or the lack thereof to key personnel. Offensive linemen Mark Setterstrom (knee) and Brandon Gorin (shoulder) were lost for the season. None of the starters had a serious issue.

“I’d say we’re fairly healthy at this point,” coach Scott Linehan said after Thursday night’s storm-delayed Governor’s Cup contest. “I really feel comfortable where we’re at as a team, and not just the health. (We have) progressed through the preseason. I’m happy with our progress.”

Notes & quotes:

>>C Nick Leckey started, but Linehan kept the rest of his first-teamers on the sideline.

>>Brock Berlin again outdueled Bruce Gradkowski in the battle for the No. 3 QB job. Berlin was 13 of 21 for 107 yards, with a 20-yard TD strike to WR Dane Looker, and no interceptions. His passer rating was 90.8. Gradkowki was 11 of 18 for 105 yards, no scores and one interception. His PR was 54.2.

>>RB Lance Ball, an undrafted rookie from Maryland, was solid as a ballcarrier, picking up 70 yards on 13 carries and scoring on a 2-yard run. But his missed block led to a partial block of a Donnie Jones punt and the Chiefs’ first touchdown.

>>RB Travis Minor rushed for 21 yards and caught five passes. But he also lost a fumble.

>>In a late bid for a roster spot, WR Marques Hagans had four receptions for 47 yards.

>>The Rams have just 10 days to iron out some nagging special-teams problems.

All for now . . . more Friday after Linehan’s media get-together.

The Rams have 10 days off until the season starts so why not play the 1st team offense with Steven jackson (who has seen no action yet) for at least the 1st quarter against the Chiefs if not the whole 1st half? Under Linehan the Rams have come out flat every season which I think stems from not getting enough reps in the pre-season. And why give Trent Green so little playing time - what if Bulger goes down in the 1st game? I am optimistic this year if Bulger plays mad like he finally did against the Ravens and we stay healthy but am definitely worried about the lack of playing time for the regulars in the pre-season. GO RAMS!
