Pittman, Leonard, Minor . . . who needs Jackson?

Steven? Steven who?

Shoot, the Rams don’t need Steven Jackson. Not after pounding out 183 rushing yards Saturday night against the Chargers, the defending AFC West champs. Antonio Pittman cruised for 67 yards on nine carries, a glitzy 7.4-yard average. Brian Leonard tacked on 38 yards on eight tries with the first-team offense, and Travis Minor picked up 39 yards on 11 carries with the reserves.

OK, the run game was decent Saturday night. Still, the Rams produced just one touchdown — and once again, it wasn’t scored by the starters — in a 7-6 victory.

So, don’t be confused. The Rams very much need Steven Jackson. The question is, will they have him before next Saturday’s home game vs. the Ravens?

Stay tuned . . .

Notes & quotes:

>>What’s up with Marc Bulger? He was awful last week at Tennessee and not much better vs. the Chargers. For the preseason, he’s just 10 of 23 for 85 yards, no touchdowns and with two interceptions.

>>Brock Berlin, conversely, is 14 for 17 for 148 yards, and he hasn’t thrown a pick.

>>Finally, the tight end got involved in the passing game. Randy McMichael had three receptions for 54 yards, and Joe Klopfenstein had one catch for 12 yards.

>>The Rams’ four QBs completed passes to 10 different receivers. McMichael, Brian Leonard and Lance Ball had three catches each to lead the way.

>>A week after the Titans flattened the No. 1 defense, things were much different. The Chargers were without some of their stars, but as Rams DT Adam Carriker pointed out, “That’s football. You’re going to have injuries during the year, too. You’ve got to play with what you’ve got.”

>>DE Leonard Little looked as if he’d turned back the clock a few years. He had one sack and was in the backfield on several other occasions.

>>Rookie DE Chris Long made a nice play when he ran down RB Mike Tolbert from behind, preventing a first down and helping to stop a San Diego drive deep in Rams territory.

All for now . . .

Great Game! The Rams showed that it’s starters can hang with one of the Big Boys of the AFC’s practice squad. By hang I mean stay within a TD by half time.

Chris Long tackled someone named Mike Tolbert from behind…I’m sure he would’ve gotten to Tomlinson even faster.

None of Bulgers 2 picks were returned for TDs… I believe that is solid improvement from last week.

Regarding S.Jackson: One of the chargers broadcasters said it best. “I don’t get the Hold Out. They lost 13 games last year. Is he saying they would’ve lost more with out him? I think the Rams can win 3 games again without him.”

It’s hard to say this about my favorite team but I think the Rams are the worst team in the NFL…and last time I checked Atlanta was still in the NFL.

Sorry , Rams fans. (And I liked the GSOT, love Marshall Faulk) If you’re looking for solace in this game’s outcome: substitute the Phrase “Several San Diego starters and mostly guys who never get to play a real game” for “Chargers” in all the post-game articles. Starters Not Playing on Offense: QB, TB, FB, LT, C, TE, WR, WR. On Defense: NT, DT, OLB, CB, CB, SS. No blitzes. No Play-action. Minimal motion.
In San Diego, the big headline was about a toe: that Antonio Gates ran routes pre-game without pain.

I think that the Rams could go with these 3 backs this season rather than Jackson whom I think is good, but not great. Jackson is and always will be MR. Fumble in my book. Bulger continues to prove my point year after year that he is a one dimensional QB, a product of a once great O-line, and without that he totally sucks. I hope he blows his knee out in preseason and Green takes over.

PS. We have a complete turd for a coach. Flush or fire him……Now. Is it just me or does he look like he’s in over his head every week.

PSS. Jackson, I hope you read this, you being the Rams best offensive player is like being the smartest dumb kid. Bulger…Warner is still a better QB than you are, and once your contract is up you will be holding the clipboard while the 1st stringers are out there buddy because you stink worse than a Johnny on the Spot in the July sun at Fair St. Louis.

Thank God for fantasy football.

Running backs in the NFL are overrated. There’s plenty of examples of this. When Edgerin James left the Colts, they won with a rookie running back. Kiki Barber retired and the Giants won the Superbowl. Joe Montana won his first Superbowl with Bill Ring at running back. (And Jerry Rice was still in college.)
Does anyone think it really matters who’s in the backfield for the Patriots?
The top three QB’s in the last 30 yrs have been to at lease10 superbowls. (Montana, Manning, Brady.) Exchange any of those with Elway you have even more. The best running backs, Simpson, Dickerson, and Sanders, have never even been to a Superbowl.
That’s why when I hear that the Rams miss Steven Jackson I cringe. With or without him they’re the same team. Trade him for a offensive lineman and a future draft pick, and you set the team up to for real improvement.

I think Jackson had better worry about his job. Sure, he’s a giant physical specimen who can bowl some people over. But I recall that Faulk did very little bowling over and got his yardage by an ability to avoid tacklers. Give me a quick, smart runner who can sneak thru the holes.

Does anyone listening to Rams radio get the feeling that these night games end well beyond Jim Hanifan’s bedtime? Or is it just me? Boy, they need some new blood in the broadcast booth. And Sevie is competent, but boring. What’s Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton doing these days anyway?

Jackson Who? Pittman looked great. He looked like he did at Ohio State out there. I think he can further elevate his game given the opportunity.

Are you guys serious? Who needs Jackson?!? What kind of crack are you people smoking in St. Louis?! Even with an “improved” offensive line, Bulger was still almost snapped in half in this game! And talk about burying the REAL story… Bulger/Rams went 0-2 on 4th and goal. We have enough problems at the OL and WR positions, without Jackson you can expect us to score about 7 pts per game all season long.
