Pittman, Leonard, Minor . . . who needs Jackson?

Steven? Steven who?

Shoot, the Rams don’t need Steven Jackson. Not after pounding out 183 rushing yards Saturday night against the Chargers, the defending AFC West champs. Antonio Pittman cruised for 67 yards on nine carries, a glitzy 7.4-yard average. Brian Leonard tacked on 38 yards on eight tries with the first-team offense, and Travis Minor picked up 39 yards on 11 carries with the reserves.

OK, the run game was decent Saturday night. Still, the Rams produced just one touchdown — and once again, it wasn’t scored by the starters — in a 7-6 victory.

So, don’t be confused. The Rams very much need Steven Jackson. The question is, will they have him before next Saturday’s home game vs. the Ravens?

Stay tuned . . .

Notes & quotes:

>>What’s up with Marc Bulger? He was awful last week at Tennessee and not much better vs. the Chargers. For the preseason, he’s just 10 of 23 for 85 yards, no touchdowns and with two interceptions.

>>Brock Berlin, conversely, is 14 for 17 for 148 yards, and he hasn’t thrown a pick.

>>Finally, the tight end got involved in the passing game. Randy McMichael had three receptions for 54 yards, and Joe Klopfenstein had one catch for 12 yards.

>>The Rams’ four QBs completed passes to 10 different receivers. McMichael, Brian Leonard and Lance Ball had three catches each to lead the way.

>>A week after the Titans flattened the No. 1 defense, things were much different. The Chargers were without some of their stars, but as Rams DT Adam Carriker pointed out, “That’s football. You’re going to have injuries during the year, too. You’ve got to play with what you’ve got.”

>>DE Leonard Little looked as if he’d turned back the clock a few years. He had one sack and was in the backfield on several other occasions.

>>Rookie DE Chris Long made a nice play when he ran down RB Mike Tolbert from behind, preventing a first down and helping to stop a San Diego drive deep in Rams territory.

All for now . . .

I lose a great deal of respect for athletes who hold out because of a contract dispute. Hello, it’s called a contract. You signed it. Honor it. If you want a new deal at the end of your term you’ll get one, but first show us your worth it. There was a certain QB that showed the world just how much he loved the game about eight years ago. He played for the league minimum, took a 4-12 team to the Super Bowl, won it and was named MVP. The following year, the guy shows up to camp without asking for a dime. Kurt Warner is a classy player and a champion. These young punks in sports today should take note. Their are some rookies out there that could rival Jackson and would be honored to prove it just by making the roster of an NFL team. These are the athletes I want to see on Sunday. The ones that love the game and are thankful for what their worth.

i’ve been a rams fan since the mid 60’s. when carroll rosenbloom died, i tolerated georgia trashing steve rosenbloom who had been groomed to take over the franchise by his dad. i tolerated georgia’s idiocy and her cheap attitude that lost players like ferragamo, dickerson, reynolds, brudzinski, etc., and had to tolerate georgia’s braindead petulant ownership. i tolerated the real-life saga of the movie “Major League” as the bimbo heiress made the rams as bad as possible so LA wouldn’t mind seeing them leave. i remained a rams fan when the team moved to st louis even though one reason i moved to so cal was to be able to follow the rams. i tolerated georgia’s hatred for the LA fans, and i have made an effort to tolerate the new ugliest uniforms in the league. the move to StL hasn’t been all bad…i actually liked st louis’ enthusiasm and streak of sell-outs, and i liked stan kroenke’s big bankroll that paid for a great coaching staff and gave the franchise a (temporary) sugar daddy who not only wanted to win, but had the financial backing to make it happen. Unfortunately things have changed. the uniforms look even uglier as this sorry franchise sinks into the abyss. stan kroenke has lost interest knowing he can’t own the team. georgia’s son chip is a absent-owner airhead who has even less interest in the franchise than his mother. here’s the good news for me - i no longer care about this team except to hope that chip sells it to one of his hollywood movie mogul buddies who will bring them back to so cal where they can once again wear the california gold and blue and have an owner that really cares about winning.

Hey sdp,

Why don’t you cry to someone else and watch one of the 3 other teams in your state. At least the helmet matches the jersey now.

Everett to Flipper was one of my all time favorites. However, so is keeping quality players. Look, we all know there are thousands of people who would love to run for the Rams…but there’s a huge gap between want and ability. Jackson is a proven commodity that the Rams cannot live without. Contract? Well, unlike baseball, NFL contracts basically amount to one-year deals (teams can cut anybody at anytime, take a salary cap hit, and basically call it a day). Kurt Warner was a Godsend and one in a mil–but so is Jackson. Warner didn’t have to whine about $$ b/c Martz & co. made sure he got paid. Why not pay Jackson? We need our best players on the field…starting another rookie is not the answer. Jackson is the answer. Let’s stop looking like a cheap organization and pay our players what they deserve. I think we need to walk in the players shoes and understand that in a career that only lasts about 10 years (if you’re lucky), you have to seize your moment.

The NFL needs to do something about these holdouts. They’ve gotten out of hand. Penalties need to be stiffer. If a player is under contract, he should have to play.

Some on this blog claim running back is overrated, and they’re probably right — quarterback is more important. But right now, Jackson is the best player on this team. He’ll get his yards, no matter how bad the line is. They HAVE to have Jackson to keep this season from being another total embarassment.

If this season is as bad as last year, they need to clean house with the coaching staff and roster. What happened to their committment to speed and talent at WR?

There’s a bad atmosphere around this entire franchise right now and the negativity is gaining momentum. Hopefully they get someone in there who knows what they’re doing and bring a winner back to St. Louis. Then the fans will come back and all this moving back to L.A talk will cease.

If Jackson doesn’t want to play, lets trade him for a good young proven back that’s still hungry plus we could undoubtedly get a high draft pick thrown in. I’m tired of all the pro sports whiners that will not honor a contract. Don’t expect any sympathy from the fans that are having a tough time just making ends meet. And the QB situation is horrible–ever since Bulger signed his big contract, he hasn’t done diddly squat. He should be sent packing as well. I’m sure between Trent and Brock, we could do fine at QB this season.

I hope everyone that expects players to honor contracts steps up and forces St. Louis to honor ours in 2012 when the clause kicks in that states that we have to have a stadium in the top 1/3 in the league, even if it means building a new one.

Well, last weeks game made all the hope and promise of a better season quickly go down the crapper.

Bulger looks terrible. Selfish Steven is still sitting out. The offensive line is crumbling again. What is going on with this team? It is beyond frustrating.

I don’t know if it’s the coaches or management, but something has to change. Last year was embarassing, but at least you could chalk it up to an injury-laced abberation. Now, who knows? Maybe this Rams team just as terrible as that 3-13 record.

And remember, St. Louis, last time the Rams looked this bad they packed up and left town.

Just a suggestion to all my fellow Rams fans,(are their any left)?

Stop and think, how many home games will be televised this year anyway? If it’s not a sell-out, we get blacked-out right?

Don’t let the “Scott Linehan Carnival Road Show” ruin your Sunday’s! I plan the game around outdoor activities I need to do around the house.

Once the Rams go 7 points down, I click off the T.V., go outdoor, turn on the radio coverage, and actually get meaningful productive yard work etc.. done around the house!

I am tired of folks saying that the Rams should just pay Jackson, get him on the field, he deserves it because he is the best player on the team!? But here’s a news flash people…..no one, and I mean no one, deserves twenty million guarenteed! He was guarenteed fifteen million folks, and that is just a stupid amount of money as it is! They offered him plenty of freaking cash nugget-heads! This is a freaking football game and you have guys acting like 2 year olds over the difference of five million dollars! And don’t tell me it’s because he needs to put food on the table either! It’s freaking rediculous that players run the looney bins! This is a sport that we grew up playing as kids and you have college kids killing themselves just to make it to the big leagues….then the money comes and everybody thinks they deserve every flipping penny that they demand, how sad! There are emergency and service men and women that risk their lives every day for our sorry asses and they don’t even get paid crap…….yet athletes and incoherent fans think we should just shovel an ungodly amount of money on a player just because he “could” or “is” be the best player on the team! Last time I checked, it takes a team to win a Super Bowl….not a running back! Jackson should be thankful that he was offered as much as he was! Hell, anyone should be happy with that retarded amount of money that is being thrown at them to play a freaking game! And a 3 man running-back system is fine with me…..at least those guys look like they love the sport of football and just want to help the Rams be the best possible! Unfortunately, there is this @$$-tard Bulger who consistently throws the ball to the other team and you have an incompetent coach in Linehan losing the respect of his players and fans! My opinion….keep the three man running back committee and start Trent Green!
