Rams keep getting caught in draft

Two more Rams draft picks fell by the wayside Friday, when safety Jerome Carter (4th round/2005) and wide receiver Marques Hagans (5th round/2006) were released. This continues a damaging trend involving the team’s draftees.

In the five drafts prior to this year’s, the Rams selected 47 players. Only 17 remain with the club. That number includes just one of 11 draftees in 2003 (Pisa Tinoisamoa) and one of seven in 2004 (Steven Jackson).

Those kinds of percentages are a major detriment in trying to build a winning franchise and provide stark evidence in understanding why the Rams haven’t put together a .500-plus record since 2003.

Player evaluation, both on the college and pro level, is a huge factor, and the Rams have been lacking in both areas. It’s Billy Devaney’s job to get that straightened out. If he can, the team will take a major step in the rebuilding process. It not, expect the L’s to keep piling up.

>>Barring further problems this week, it’s possible the Rams will have everyone on the roster healthy enough to suit up Sept. 7 in Philly. CB Fakhir Brown (shoulder) is the biggest question mark. He hasn’t had any contact since going down in the first practice at training camp.

>>CB/S Ron Bartell earned high marks in the coaches’ grading system during the four preseason games, when he filled in for Brown. So did S Todd Johnson, who replaced Oshiomogho Atogwe (hamstring) in the staring lineup.

>>Linehan originally had planned to get rookie DE Chris Long six or eight snaps Thursday night in KC, but changed his mind after a thunderstorm drenched Arrowhead Stadium and delayed kickoff 90 minutes.

>>Linehan described the injury that T Orlando Pace suffered to his right shoulder Aug. 16 vs. San Diego as a strained biceps tendon. “It’s really not bothering him now,” Linehan reported Friday.

All for now . . .

It will take a long long time to overcome the poor draft record; now combine poor Free Agent signings and you get what we have. A poor football team that may not be as good as those Rich Brooks had. I think the Rams have a good chance of improving their draft position. I hope I’m wrong but I can easily see the Rams 0-8 with Linehan gone.

WE , hadso many injuries last year , we are much better than that, and I guess all you negative before the season start guys, picked us to win in 99. truth is how good or bad the rams are this year is yet to be determined, I think they’ll be much better than most of you people, hope you don’t treat your kids they way you do the rams, if you do they’ll grow up some real winners I mean ,why focus on any negative thing you can find at least think good until they give you a reason to think bad , oh yea , you guys all ready no everything, go RAMS there is still some real fans in town

This team is worthy of cautious optimism. The injuries were devastating last year and Saunders is an awesome fit at OC for this team. They still have many weapons on offense with a beast in SJax but also big questions at WR after Holt (who’s still one of the best). If someone steps up like Avery or Burton - a lot to ask for rookies - things could get interesting. Probably a year or two away from a high level, but there is definitely talent and coaching to compete.

Every team cuts draft picks. Every year. This is nothing unusual or noteworthy, especially when one of the cuts was a 5th rounder.

Rams Rock is right but he can’t spell! Listen to this prediction. Our Defense will be top 10 in the NFL. Another thing,if Bulger chokes again in comes Trent Green to rally us into the playoffs. No more Mike Martz to bail out Mark BUMGER. Our Defense is going to be good enough to carry us with an agressive running attack. Look for Jackson and my boy Antonio Pittman to have a big year. Pittman has flashes of greatness(reminds me of Terrel Davis)Go Rams!!10-6 with a playoff birth

My beloved RAMS left Los Angeles because of poor fan support. I think it is a disgrace that each home game doesn’t sell out. I think once Al Davis dies and all his legal ties to the L.A. area regarding a new or relocated football team, the RAMS will be coming home where they belong. If the fans there don’t want them, and it looks like you don’t, we (Los Angeles) would love to have them back. Also, with Georgia (R.I.P.) passing, it’s not out of the question that we lure them back. I already have my tickets for the Dec. 4th game in Glendale Arizona, 20 yard line, 6th row. This game will cost me roughly $350 including a plane ticket on Southwest Airlines. St. Louis fans need to go to the home games, every game. To the real RAMS fans on this board, appreciate every minute, win lose or draw, you have one of the most historic teams in NFL history. NEVER FORGET THAT!

It would be nice to know whose idea it was to draft Claude Wroten and Dominique Byrd. This has been a problem since Martz thought Eric Crouch, Travis Jacobs and Jacoby Shepard were good ideas.

Cutting second day draft picks is routine. Cutting first day draft picks should not be.

And how many Pro Bowls have our draft picks been selected as honorees?

Finally, you only had to attend the MU-IL game to hear a lot of noise in the dome. A winning team makes a noisy dome, not the other way around.

Cheer up! The first team the Rams play on September seventh have lost draft picks too - first and third rounders:
