Did you hear the big news Monday from Rams Park?

No, you didn’t. Because there wasn’t any.

As usual, coach Scott Linehan took the podium at 4 p.m., followed by defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and offensive coordinator Al Saunders. For about 45 minutes, they tried to explain away another jarring and embarrassing defeat, while providing reasonable answers to stinging questions. It wasn’t pleasant, but they deserve credit for facing the fire.

New owner Chip Rosenbloom is an an extraordinarily difficult position. Does he honor his dying mother’s wish and stick with Linehan till the end of the year? Remember, the Rams haven’t changed head coaches during a season since 1962, when Bob Waterfield resigned.

On the other hand, can Rosenbloom afford to wait and risk that the franchise, which Georgia Frontiere loved so dearly, will tumble even further into a deep and dark abyss?

If Rosenbloom determines that the highly unpopular Linehan must go, and soon, does he:

A) Do it now, on the heels of three dreadful performances and before Sunday’s home game vs. Buffalo? It almost certainly would put more seats in the seats at the Dome, and at least would create a positive buzz among an increasingly hostile fan base.

B) Wait until after the game and do it during the subsequent bye week? That would provide some time for the transition to set in, and also would allow the new head coach (presumably an interim choice) to get his feet wet on the road (Oct. 12 at Washington).

These are difficult questions — far tougher than the coaching braintrust is facing. How Rosenbloom answers them will tell us a great deal about what kind of owner he intends to be and perhaps set the tone for the franchise for years to come.

All for now . . .

1. Grades too high. yada yada.
2. Shaw is telecommuting. Maybe the defense is too.
3. Where’s the play action passing? What’s easier for opposing defense? To get fooled on runs they stop for no gain or short passes that go for no gain. If I was any opponent, I’d put 10 in the box too.
4. On second thought, Isaac Bruce going to S.F. was a blessing…..for his career. I’m sure he’s going “Rams Who???”
5. To all the St. Louis fans that don’t really know this team, what do you think happened during the 80’s and 90’s?
6. Cardinals in first place.

Bulger will be a good QB on any other team.

Keep Scott for the next five years. We can use a whole new O-Line.

I don’t know about everyone else but at least the games are easier to watch this year. I remember in the past I would get excited and get butterflies in my stomach, ulcers and whatnot. Not this year, no reason to get angry or excited anymore because the games have been lost well before the Rams take the field. What a horrific job of management all around. All I know is that if I did my job as poorly as the current players and coaches on this team I would be fired.

Don’t expect any changes. Chip was blowing smoke up your you know what to keep fan interest as long as possible. He is only worried about revenue, driving the price of the franchise up to sale. Chip let’s the hated coaches take the stand and try to settle fan unrest, instead of showing the marbles to answer questions himself, because now he will hide from media and fans, he was banking on improved performance against Seattle to atleast keep fan interest for a few more home games. No changes coming until there is a change of ownership, and I hope that owner atleast has the testicular fortitude to face media and fans, and fire the incompetent front office people and their hand picked coaches in LineScam and Has-Been.

“I’m Scared to death to lose”…..
This only gives fans and players the idea that he as a coach leaves losing as an option. Vermiel and Martz never considered that an option. Those two coaches got hard nosed and closer to the players. Linehan seems to have the same effect on the rams that a substitute teacher does for a 7th grade middle school history class.

WELL…AT LEAST THE RAMS HAVEN’T GONE TO A LAST RESORT MOVE SUCH AS….oh I don’t know a little something I call the NEW ENGLAND SPECIAL which involves cheating and doing anything you can to win, if anything we still have our class, maybe little pride at this point but we haven’t cheated!

i dont care what the rams do this season, as long as they do what it takes to get a schottenheimer or cowher for the seasons to come.

I think everyone is overlooking a practical and maybe almost too obvious option here that just might help this franchise/team. EXERCISM. Maybe Haslett brought over some of that voodoo curse that was put on the Saints down in the Bayou and now our team’s spirit has been subdued. Nobody else can seem to figure out what’s going on with this teams pathetic performance. Get a young priest and an old priest with some holy water and just clean Rams Park, from the locker rooms to the practice fields and through the offices. And then if nothing changes, go ahead and fire the whole lot of them. I’m not trying to offend. I’ve actually held off this comment for the week to see what would happen in Seattle. There’s something just not right with this team. Just not right. We need to lift the dark cloud that hangs over these players. I can’t imagine that it would cost very much to do, either.

Scott Linehan needs to be gone. He gives the team no sence of urgency nor does he insist that these highly paid “hold-outs” perform the way they said they could. The team is only as good as the leader. If I hire someone to do a job, I will give him a job description and job duties list. If he can’t give what he is paid to give then he needs to go. This should be the same for everyone on the team. The coach is not the only one to blame. But, the buck stops there. If Chip Rosenbloom does not address the situation that is here, then he is only telling the team that he is accepting mediocrity. (sp?) Make a decision and stand by it and let there be an end to the speculation. Yes, this is a lousy team. “THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH” left the building long ago. Will it ever be back? Only Chip Rosenbloom can provide the answer.

The issue with firing Linehan - and his staff - at the midpoint of the season is getting the quality replacements we need. IF we could get Cowher to come in…would the coordinators and assistants he wants for his staff even be available until after the season (assuming many of them already have jobs for other NFL or college teams)? Who else might become available after the season. Marty Schottenheimer? Mike Holmgren (he’s not done coaching, just done with Seattle)? Make a run at somebody like Steve Spagnuolo? What about a GM…Ron Wolf (he did wonders in Green Bay)? So much needs to be fixed internally…let alone on the field…but given that it looks like the players have quit on Linehan, who knows what kind of talent we really have. Either way…it’s a long road to the 2009-2010 season and the first rays of hope for this franchise.

I saw a special on NFL network called Top 10 Guttiest performances and # 1 on the list was Los Angeles Rams DE Jack Youngblood playing in The NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl on a broken leg. I began to realize this is a proud franchise that has had great players who gave great efforts in order to win. I think this Ram team has a few players willing to give that type of effort ie Long, Witherspoon, Jackson, but his coaching staff is not the one capable of putting them in winning situations. Linehan and Hasslet must Go!

Mercy, please give us mercy. How can a franchise in which the NFL promotes parity be so bad. The offense is offensive, the defense is putrid, the special teams (other than the kicker and punter) are just bad. That’s right folks, our special teams are the best part of this team. Heaven help us. I’m just a fan, for 35 years, but I’ve never seen anything like this. The players are stealing, the coaches are clueless and management have their heads in the sand. Mercy.

Fire all the coaches now Chip! Your Mother is dead and can’t mismanage the team from the grave like she did in life unless you all her memory to. Unbelievable. At least Bill Bidwell had some fortitude when he was here with the Big Red.

Bench Bulger? How about the stats of the self proclaimed best running back in the league……Faulk who? If this guy ran the ball as well as he runs his mouth maybe he would have more than 53 ypg.

S. Jackson 3 50 159 53.0 3.18 15 0 1 0

I like the comment of keeping Linehan 5 more years, so we can get a new offensive line. Five more #1 picks sounds great. Problem is, there seems to be no one at Rams Park that knows squat about how to draft and develop talent. Whoever is responsible for the Trung Canidates, the Claude Wrotens, the Jimmy Kennedys, the Damione Lewises, the Eric Crouches, the Tye Hills, the Joe Klopfensteins–get those turkeys out of town now! I mean, really–are there other winning NFL franchises that screw up with that kind of regularity? I doubt it.

Rosenblom should roll the dice and axe Linehan now…whats the worst that can happen…going 0-4. I can understand wanting to honor his mothers’ dying wish, but by firing Linehan he sets a tone to the club and sends a message to his dwindling fan base.

— Dano
1:16 pm September 23rd, 2008

The fix is not firing SL now but letting/forcing Shaw to retire and firing Jay Z immediately. That will shake up the players as the ax will be hanging over not only the coaches heads but the players as well. This would allow new personnel in the front office to evaluate who has value and be retained while lining up replacements for those terminated after the season.

If they fire Linehan now, do you what the same people that brought you Linehan hiring the new/interm coach? Come on people, your rage is directed in the wrong place. When has firing the middle manager ever turned a company around. It stinks at the top! Great management can inspire everyone down the ladder to perform at a higher level than the talent dictates (for both coaches and players).

— Alan
1:26 pm September 23rd, 2008

I agree, Alan. Shaw and Zygmunt would continue to mismanage the hiring of both coaches and players. Getting rid of Linehan and Haslett won’t cure anything. The ORGANIZATION need to be rebuilt starting at the top. Look what happened to Miami in just one year under Parcells.

I am very disappointed with the Seahawk fans for booing Josh Brown and hanging out signs that said “Josh Brown is a punk” and also upset with the TV cameras showing it. What classless people. Did the Ram fans boo Grant Wistrom when he retured to St Louis as a Seahawk or Kurt Warner as a Cardinal or any other former Rams, I doubt it. Will they boo Isacc Bruce when he returnes as a hated 49er? I don’t think so, but leave to Seattle. What a gem they are in the Great Northwest.

It is deplorable to think that 48 millionaires are not ready to play football. Each week on television there is a sideline reporter depicting the apathy on the bench. How deplorable! How can there be apathy when some individuals are depositing money into accounts that some fans will not make in a lifetime. The apathy is from a fan base that expects to see passion, conviction and talent. The sideline issue is not so much a coaching issue as it is individual desire to succeed in sport that requires passion. Similar to the individual that illustrates nothing in a business if some of these athletes care so little for the game, dress those that care and terminate the rest!

Trent Green is ONE concussion away from forgetting how to find his way home……….Somewhere Chris Miller is laughing from the freeway, still not having found HIS way home yet, At Least Everett had the Phantom Sack to drive him out of the game, All Bulger has is the classic “Deer in the Headlights” look……..

I’ve never seen a Pro Sports Head Coach who has checked his stones at the door like Linehan. He gives new meaning to “Gut-less Wonder”, it’s shameful. Any leader who says he’s afraid to loose is no better than a gutted fish. The root cause of this phenomenon is Shaw and Ziggy. These two have shattered a nice man and turned him into a whimpering lap dog. Chip has a choice to make, his own personal gut check. Does he put up with the bubbling schiese that is the Rams Manegment, or does he channel a little of his dad and flush the cess-pool at Earth City? My bet is that if he wants to keep the fans in the seats and the money train rolling his next phone call will be a good plumber. (Ron Wolf comes to mind)

I think all of this collapse started with Mike Martz.Kurt Warner and letting Lovie Smith go.I place all this blame on that period.Linehan is a scapegoat for problem that has existed since Martz created all these problems in his final year.I say get rid of Linehan to satisfy who ever is stiring up all of his dismissal and bring in a coach such as Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, whenever he gets fired soon!!!!!!!!!!

SAY IS IF YOU PLAY BETTER FOOTBALL AND TRY TO WIN. AND
NOT GET BLOWN AWAY AND START GETTING TOUCH DOWNS.AND
MAKING THE GAMES CLOSER THAT WOULD SHOW YOUR TRYING.
AND I THINK THAT WOULD MAKE THE FANS GET BE HIDE YOU
GUY’S.AND START JUMPING BACK ON YOUR BAND WAGON.
AND MAYBE YOU GUY’S CAN TURN THIS THING AROUND.
P.S. I NEVER JUMPED OFF THE BAND WAGON. I JUST
DIDN’T LIKE WHAT I WAS SEEING.I AM A TRUE RAMS FAN.
I WILL WRITE A LETTER ABOUT BEING A TRUE FAN.

yeah, i agree that linehan is a terrible coach and firing him is in the best interest of the rams and will boost player morale but let’s not forget the real problem with the st. louis rams. defense, defense, defense. if you want to immediately improve the performance of this team get rid of the defensive coordinator and the whole defensive coaching crew. god forbid, this team gave up over 400 yds. on defense per game and over 30 points. 30 points! if you only score 17 points in a game on offense you can still win if you have a defense or a defensive play caller that knows what the he** he is doing. you stop the offense and hold them to little or no score, you win. it’s a simple formula and doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out. most defensive coaches currently active in st. louis parochial school programs right now could probably coach this defense better than the high paid losers making the play calling decisions right now. fix the defense, you fix the rams.
