Haslett forearms Redskins CB: “It was him or me”
Jim Haslett saw what happened to Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis on Sept. 13. Weis suffered two torn knee ligaments when Irish linebacker John Ryan was blocked him into on the sideline in a 35-17 victory over Michigan.
So when Haslett spied 5-11, 182-pound Redskins cornerback Leigh Torrence steaming his way while trying to cover a punt late in the third quarter Sunday, “I figured it was him or me,” Haslett said Monday. A Rams player had shoved Torrence out of bounds, and though Haslett backed up, he said he ran out of room.
“He was going to run me over or I was going to get him. I got a good shot on him” with a forearm, said Haslett, a former NFL linebacker. Torrence wasn’t pleased, and the two engaged in some some vigorous jaw-jacking before order was restored.
“You see those coaches that get toppled. That wasn’t going to be me,” Haslett said. “He’s not that big. It’s no big deal.”

Football being a game of momentum, Haslett was asked whether the victory would bolster the Rams heading into Sunday’s home game against the Cowboys. He played down how much might have been gained, however.
“We got one win; it’s been long coming,” Haslett said. “We’ll practice hard Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and we’ll give it everything we’ve got to win the game on Sunday against a great football team.”

Notes & quotes:
*Anyone notice rookie DE Chris Long sprinting stride-for-stride alongside Oshiomogho Atogwe on his 75-yard fumble return to the end zone? “Chris can run,” Haslett said. “We’re not the biggest defense, but we to have a little bit of speed.”
*LB Pisa Tinoisamoa, who had 13 tackles, including a sack, and forced the fumble that Atogwe grabbed, is having his best season in several years.
*Hard-nosed CB Ricky Manning Jr. was starting to look as if he really might be able to help the secondary before he suffered a season-ending leg injury Sunday.
*CB Ron Bartell had made vast improvement in his cover skills.
*WR Donnie Avery’s teammates marvel at his raw speed.
*The probable addition of fellow rookie WR Keenan Burton this week also could provide a speedy boost. He’s been out with a knee injury.
*Haslett has his eye on a RB from another team’s practice squad and could have him signed by Tuesday. No ID from the coach yet.
All for now . . .

Ron Bartell deserves talk of Pro Bowl this year. He has been spectacular. This defense is really coming around. We just shut down an excellent Washington offense. I think that they can continue to it, especially because of Bartell’s excellent play.
How could we have cut Brown in the first place? He was as productive as any corner that we had!Hint:Inept Head Coach, over his head and his bosses, the worst duo in the league!
I know that we can’t cut Ty Hill, but he is a liability.
The real answer to all of this lunacy is to jettison absentee John Shaw
and inept Jay Zygmunt. They are totally inadequate as top officials in any organization!
The Frontiere Family can spend their money in better ways than on these two (2) clowns!
I think the idea is great to start playing the young speedsters at WR!!Avery looks like he could be a force. Burton and Stanely we will find out how they are in the real game!1I remember hearing about Stanleys acrobatic catches during camp.It wont hurt at all and it stetches the field a whole bunch. Then enters Tory Holt and with those threats now Tory can be TORY!!!
RAMFELLOW
With Avery, Stnley, and Burton..does that mean Torry would be our fourth fastest reciever??
Tory Holt has lost two steps over the last two years and most of his bravado. He is no longer a play-maker. He is little more than a possession receiver at this point in his career. I say shop him to the contending teams for a second or third rounder and move on.
we won a game let`s keep some perspective here. working some youth into the wide outs is long over due, however getting holt off the field makes no sense. the reason avery is getting all that single coverage is because holt is getting doubled. and if a certain te would start doing his part a lot of pressure would be taken off the qb and the wide outs. as of now we should just be glad that we have a good head coach who really got a feel for the talent he has. as this season progress that young receiving core will relish from the experience of the veterans.
i think that too.
Ron Bartell is playing like never before
i know that he doesn’t have an interception but give him the credit
this guy have like 13 passes deflects and no TD in his zone
this guy is a Pro Bowler.
Yeah, telling you who Haslett’s going to poach would be a real good idea, wouldn’t it? Might as well call the game warden and tell him where you’re going to hunting without a license.
